Why don't our ISPs reject incoming mail from open relays?
There's this small problem known as invasion of privacy! This is why programs like Outlook, Outlook Express, etc all support mail filter/rule features. Send them to the trash can!

more on the rest after I might wake up...

Blocking spam is an invasion of privacy?

I have two accounts.
One is with Cogeco. Cogeco subscribes to a number of relay blacklists. I get no spam on my Cogeco e-mail. I have no problems receiving mail from any of my friends. No-one in the Cogeco forum reports problems recieving legitimate e-mail.

One is with Worldchat. 7/8 of all of my mail is spam. I have more filters than I can list here. I do not want to wade through heaps of junk. The best part is when virus(s) come attached to spam.

If you have your mail service through an ISP, and that ISP uses the various blacklists they will likely advertise this fact. If you choose to use the ISP, you must agree to their terms. It is their network that they are responsible for protecting and maintaining.
Cogeco also filters certain mail borne viruses, thus reducing the chance of infection for its customers. This also reduces the work of the abuse department as fewer of their customers will be infected, requiring a call or action from the abuse department.

This is true. There are methods available that would allow individuals and ISPs to filter spam (see »www.mxtreme.com for a hardware solution). These things cost money, and time. This would probably increase costs to the user. I can't speak on behalf of Telus or Shaw, I'm just assuming these things.

Basically what I was getting at was that if your provider is not filtering, then you should. My hotmail account used to be great, then I stopped using it for a while, and all spam. I was using it since 1994/5 when it was first around. Now my account has expired, and I have no intention of re-activating it. Spam sucks, but it's a reality that it's out there.

I guess you need to inquire with the ISP (most likely a couple of times in Tech Support Department) to see if the offer filtering.

You are a person of high confidence in Microsoft lol. Spammers are slimey bottom feeders and they know their way around MS's lousy filters. Plus Outlook has huge security gaps to boot..I have so little confidence in Microsoft that I use Steven Gibson www.grc.com to close the holes Microsoft left wide open in their software. Service Pacs have been known to screw up an 'few' unfortunate pcs.

The ISP's should spend the $ to block - charge me an extra buck a month - to be almost spam free - i would gladly pay an ISP for that, and respect them for doing the right thing.

*damn these curlers are tight*

No worries about the wrong quote.

I wasn't necesarily putting my confidence in MS...I hate them, and their security issues have been known to plague them forever!

I was simply stating that the email programs available have a lot of additional features included in them. This is not only limited to MS products.

I do however agree with you about the payment of additional spam protection. I would gladly pay for that too.
