During the summer I started getting nerved with power outages and thus not being to be online when I needed to. So I bought a power-strip UPS, and have all my DSL hardware (modem, router, switch) connected to it, so when the power goes out, I stay online. Its really nice. Oh and I'm usually on my laptop so its even better. UPS's are really nice no matter the size.

It pulls a 17" monitor with no problems. I think it's a real nice unit, and has a hot swap battery. If you're like me, and hardly read the manuals, the battery ships backwards and un-installed, but inside the unit. I had to connect the wires prior to charging.

Sirchief, her unit hooked up to the USB with no issues, and the software reports no problems, yet I never tested the shut down feature by pulling the power cord. She runs 98SE on an old Dell Optiplex with a 500 of 550? mhz cpu. Just a guess - I'm not a software engineer -- You might want to un-install the USB pieces from Windows if you're feeling brave. Maybe un-install other USB type softwares too, like memory card readers and so on. Windows should reinstall the USB pieces upon start up. Maybe then try to install the Powerchute piece first, and then whatever other USB softwares you might have. That UPS may want all the 'glory' of the USB, as it does quite a bit when power losses occur.

Know too, that following my computer advice sometimes leads to 3 or 4 hours of re-boot Hell, interspersed with cuss word punctuations. My USB memory card reader came with the world's worst software manual (PNY -whattaya expect) I finally got it all to work, but not by following the very wrong manual that came with it. For example, when I put in the PNY install disk, and clicked on 'Owners Manual' icon, this caused the install to run. Doh!

[text was edited by author 2002-12-21 10:59:35]

Grumpy4 posted : A UPS is good to have on any computer, just to even out the power dips. We apparently are having some post ice storm power problems every morning at around 7 or 8 am. The power goes just low enough to cause my 98SE laden Dell to reboot. That can't be good for the box. Apparently the battery is dead in my old APC UPS.

I recently had to buy a UPS for work, It is a Belkin 500 va box, but it can't pull a 19" monitor's start up load. I know I spec'd a little on the light side, but my work box is only a 1999 500 mhz cpu Dell. I'm a little disappointed that I can't pull that monitor.
