After the Challenger exploded there weren't any shuttle launches for 26 months. The problem now is that there are astronauts up in the International Space Station and they could be in for a long wait. I think the Russians could help out with their Soyuz capsules, if necessary. I suppose it depends how quickly NASA find out what went wrong this time, not really something you want to rush.
