LameDuck5 posted : If a DHCP server is configured properly - then DNS server is not required to be hard coded. But i guess in this case the router and its DHCP server was not doing a good job (refer discussions of last week).
IN my setup - linksys router takes its own IP address and DNS server's address from Verizon's DHCP servers.. then it confirgures its own DHCP server to provide that info to all local hosts who's DHCP server is my linksys router... works well and nothing is hardcoded.

When ATA is configured to use static IP, and when there is no DHCP server available on the local area network - then ATA needs a DNS server from which it can resolve the name of SIP proxy server.

HeartWind$ posted : I second LD's comments that ICH should have these elements in the instructions. But am curious why a VOIP service needs a DNS?? If it does need DNS, it would seem to me that the DNS address should be that of ICH's own DNS not the ISP.

There is also the significant problem factor of DNS servers when named specifically are often times overloaded, or they change. For example, Bellsouth customers are specifically requested to NOT manually code a bellsouth DNS server IP address into their routers, or TCP/IP settings because bellsouth frequently changes those for things like upgrades, security, reconfigurations and so on.

I just just find the recommendation to be a bit questionable and suspect.

olruebe posted : Hi LameDuck,

do you remember my (our) Problem with my ATA and "always busy"? Now I received an answer from the customersupport.

Here ist the answer:
--------
Dear Customer,

Please be advised that I have reviewed your configuration page and it
seems to be in order. I would like to make a suggestion that should
resolve your difficulties. Please contact your ISP and ask them to
provide you with the IP address of their DNS server. Please enter the IP
address they give you in the following fields: 'DNS1IP' and 'DNS2IP'.

Please let us know if this change enables you to make calls.

Sincerely,
--------------------

This works, so the Problem was the DNS.

Greetings,
Oliver
