Umm....Why did he send this to BBR and not like CNN or Foxnews? BBR is a great news site, but its not exactly a top news source(for things other than broadband related). |

gee is he selling a bridge we can all chip in on and buy? If this guy had access to this type of information you would be seeing him on CNN or Fox News, not sending letter to BBR.

he didnt send it, it was posted in a private forum here, and we thought it deserved a wider audience rather than just be seen by a few people. |

There are way too many people that work on the shuttle for you to see all of them on CNN. CNN doesn't even care for technical details. |

Why would major news publishers care about a story like this? They get technical details on things from hundreds of sources when things like the shuttle accident happen. |

That's one of the things about front page news items. The attention wh0r3s on here that speak merely to be heard tend to chime in all too regularly. This is often without taking a second to consider other people's feelings.
Sure... "Oh-bla-dee, oh-bla-da" all you want. But before you just gloss over this tragedy allow others to voice their feelings without telling them that what they feel is "irrelevant." |

What does the credit "Written by.." at the top of the article mean? Did you mean this to be anon?
One of the last projects my father (now passed) worked on before retiring, was tile design (shape and attachment). I remember him bringing samples home, and I can imagine how people connected (even tentatively) to the project could be affected by this. He may not be sharing secrets - he is just sharing. Give him a break. |

Hmmm, let's see. Because CNN and/or FOX News are larger news agencies, this makes them more credible. Riiiiiight. Well, here's what CNN had to say about Columbia: 18 times the speed of light?! I don't think anything more needs to be said on that note. The fact is news is news. If a particular story warrants the attention of the public, it shouldn't matter where it was first published. He felt comfortable with BBR and so he approached them with his story. Just be glad he came forth with it in the first place and have faith that it wasn't edited as much as it would have been had it been published on such notoriously one-sided news conglomerates as CNN and/or FOX. |

Maybe he doesn't want national exposure. I can agree with him on that. It deeply disturbs me that nasa knew that it had tile problems, and launched it anyways. =x. |

As for why he would post his comments here and not a news site, some people have this site as their homepage. I for one do. When you visit and post regularly, you tend to feel a kinship to others in the BBR "family". Perhaps he felt his comments would be more accepted by others in BBR, or maybe he thought that commercial news sites would edit or delete/censor his comments. That is unknown. But I would like to personally thank the anonymous person who posted this informative and insightful piece. |

Karl Bode , a.k.a. Karl Bode, posted the text from the forum onto the front page. That's all the Written by... means. |

Who says he glossed over the tragedy? You think this is his first contact with the news of the loss of Columbia and her crew? Please.
Is a matter of saturation. Some come to DSLR to escape this horrid news and talk about something else...but to no avail. There's no escaping this horrid event...even at DSLR. Perhaps you should bother to respect the feelings of those looking for a diversion...who can't find it. |

Where is it posted that DSLR is an escape from reality? Your statement is one of the most asinine things I've heard in quite awhile. You should be ashamed. |

Who said it's an escape from reality? If you want to misquote and/or misconstrue my words...at least be a little clever doing it.
Like you even knew the names of these astronauts before Feb. Such faked emotion, you sir, should be the one ashamed. |

Perhaps I'm missing something, but I'm quite sure it was you who said, and I quote, "Some come to DSLR to escape this horrid news and talk about something else...but to no avail. There's no escaping this horrid event...even at DSLR."said by Go Chargers7:

This isn't about me, nor if I knew any names of the deceased - I also can't find in my post where I displayed any emotion, much less faked any. This is about the person who posted here and shared his feelings about friends of his that just died. They died serving their country, and you seem to have a problem with someone being saddened by it. Please, do us all a favor and keep your cynicism to yourself. |

He was not "sending a letter to BBR", he was posting his thoughts and experiences, like you would. There are intelligent and well accomplished people on DSLR, who like everyone else, need a place to "vent" and discuss what's on one's mind. You might not get to interact with them, depending on which forums you dwell in. But I assure you, they're here, and just like in "real life", people of a feather, flock together. It's just a matter of which forums on DSLR you're used to and have access to, that will give you the opportunity to either meet ordinary people or bright and accomplished ones, or both. There's a place for everyone on this website. |

I had read each of their biographies on space.com BEFORE the launch. Some of us do care. |

Enough said. Why would that person post here? Why not? Those other news agencies are worthless. I also remember FoxNews posting the Columbia's speed as "MOCK 18". Ha ha ha! Idiots. It is "MACH" 18..... It would seem to me that whoever that poster is, that he/she is someone on the inside of the program, knows what they're talking about, and should not be dismissed so easily. It's also obvious that they must be broadband enthusiasts or he/she wouldn't have known to post here. |

If anyone has any old Discover magazines from 1981 to 1984, you would find articles in them regarding the tile problems that NASA had with the orbiters. From my understanding, the orbiters never return with every tile still attached to the ship. Some fall off during launch, some fall off while in orbit and others fall off on re-entry. They are constantly replacing tiles. Also, not all tiles are manufactured exactly like the ones that they are replacing. They are working on different materials to replace the tiles currently on the orbiters. Hopefully something better will come along. Also, Columbia was supposed to be retired back in 1986, but because of the destruction of Challenger, NASA decided to upgrade the systems in it and continue using it. We all know that Enterprise was the prototype or Alpha version for all the orbiters. I guess you can say that Columbia was the Beta version of the Shuttle Program. The Discover magazines from 1981 - 1984 should somewhere outline other issues that Columbia had. |

I don't doubt that, but this poster knew things that I think would be hard to deduce solely from magazine articles. I think the he/she has some credibility here. Why they decided to post their feelings and experiences here is maybe because no one at NASA would listen, and the "credible" ( I use that term loosely) news agencies aren't interested. |
