I rarely used them, but for me too version 5.0 seemed to be more problematic, and after the other side switched too it definitely became worse.
I am not sure though, whether it's the fault of Messenger or of the router's UPnP implementation/ALGs. I haven't noticed such complaints from users of other routers, but then again, I haven't been looking for such.
