My point remains: the term "RBOC" is obsolete. Verizon is in essentially the same business as AT&T. Which is in the same business as SBC. And Cingular ain't far behind in jumping into the exact same lines of business.

They all have the same gut instinct to own the "last mile" of fiber, copper, or radio spectrum. The gentleman was referring to RBOC's only, not EVERY company involved in some sort of Telco related operation.

Are you limiting this to wireline copper companies? I wouldn't. The above 8 are all in essentially the same exact business. I would expect them to merge and become 3 by the time the dust settles. I worked 30 years for the NY Telco starting when it was all AT&T across the whole country. It is a giant slap in the face to all consumers in this country that we have been put through that breakup of the AT&T monopoly just to see all these companies merging to create another large monopoly right in front of our eyes with government approvals. It was broken up into seven regional bell operating companies in the beginning and right now we are down to 4 companies running the whole show in this country now and the countdown continues.
