Thinkdiff posted : do some research: call up your local cable and phone companies. The Cable company provides, obviously, Cable Internet, and the Phone company should provide ISDN and DSL. ISDN should be available in most places, however when I was looking to get ISDN, they had a ton of restrictions and extra charges. For example, it was something like a penny a minute for up to 200 minutes online, then a dime a minute after that. I'm sure all of that has changed since then (probably around 97, 98). Just make sure you ask a lot of questions until you completely understand what you are getting.
--
Thinkdiff's Website | You've Got Mail, Baby!

Brendan posted : ISDN is a digital, leased line technology, where DSL, even though they're telling you it's digital, isn't; it's actually analog. Anyway, ISDN is comprised of one or more digital lines, or 'channels'. These channels are 'bearer', or 'B' channels, which send data, and one 'delta' or 'D' channel, which handles protocol and signaling. ISDN requires a seperate phone line, or you can just drop your analog line and use the same pair of wires for ISDN service. Most home ISDN connections have three channels; two B channels and one D channel. You'll often hear the phrase "2B+D" to describe home ISDN connections.

ISDN has advantages over DSL, if you operate a home business or the like. ISDN is available at greater distances from the phone company's offices than DSL, because of repeaters; I've heard of 60,000+ ft. installs. You can also use one or both ISDN channels to make telephone calls, but not just any old POTS (analog) call; ISDN calls are crystal clear, and digital. :) You can get spiffy digital phones, or hook a regular analog phone to many ISDN 'modems' to make calls. All the while, you can be making a phone call on one channel, and have the other (or however many channels you've leased) still available for data.

DSLR has a great ISDN forum that can answer any more questions you have... check 'em out! :)
--
"I have a son, his name is Eden, it's his birthright, beyond estranged time" - Dead Can Dance, Black Sun
*The artist formerly known as PIC* (new and improved!)

Parogadi posted : First off, yes I'm the same guy from Apple's own Discussion boards.

Does anybody here use CPU-NET I'm looking to get off dial-up but don't want to spend to much cash, the cheaper the better, I live in Racine, WI and at my home I get a connection speed of 46667Kb if that means anything to any of you, as I know very little about "high speed" internet. Can I get some "for dummies" tips on this like what do I need to connect just my iBook to the line other that an eithernet cable, can I just go from wall socket to the jack on my iBook, what do they do to hook it up ie, do they put a new hole in my wall or what. I found this ISP through my isp finder is there any other place to get info on them, like some user reveiws? Duo
[text was edited by author 2003-03-31 10:30:26]
