Domain name for Linksys NR041I'm hooking up my Linksys NR041 router and I'm at the part where I have to enter the "Host Name" "Domain Name" and "MAC Address", and the Host Name and MAC Address are already entered automatically by the Setup Wizard, but the Domain Name isn't. Do I need to enter one? It says that it's detected the PC is setup for DHCP(don't know if that means anything). Thanks in advance. |

it should work right out of the box without changing anything. Just hook everything have, have everything powered on, and then stick a paper clip in the tiny reset hole on the back of the modem (assuming you have a SB4x00 modem). Once the modem resyncs, you should be all set to go. |

Speed LossI'm noticing speed loss. I took speed tests and they are all a lot lower. I read that this router model had minimum to no speed loss. Are there any tweaks to DrTcp I should do? Should I keep my ZA firewall? Results: The (bos.speakeasy.net) 5480/655 kbps (nyc.speakeasy.net) 6884/674 kbps
They used to be in the 8875/915 range. And the OOL test used to be around the 950KB to 1.15MB range. Any suggestions? |

Re: Domain name for Linksys NR041Probably not a router issue. Try speed test without router to be sure. Your upload speed should be higher. Is there another computer attached to the router that may be using bandwidth while you are running the speed test? Anything else on your computer using bandwidth? Otherwise, could be contention on your node. |

Re: Domain name for Linksys NR041 The speeds have gone up a lot(still not to normal), but I did the tests hooked directly to the modem. I have only my PC hooked up to the router at this point. What should I change the MTU too and how? Results:NYC Speed Test 7665/895 hooked to router 8816 / 674 hooked direct to modem *Notice the upload being higher with the router.
BOS Speed Test 7126/895 hooked to router 8481/941 direct to modem
Something I notice are different speed results when taking the tests a few times in a row also. Once the download was in the 8500 range and then took it again and it was in the 7000 range. Also when I take the OOL test it starts at 1.15MB and then drops to around 900kb and then jumps higher(950kb) then back down(880kb), etc, even after 40% (it's not always this drastic, but used to be more consistent). |

You are seeing the affects of the speed tests. They will jump all over the place; especially the Speakeasy tests. Many possible reasons for it. Just stick to the OOL speed test or the AOL speed test if you want to test out side of OOL Land. Check your speed at these two sites:Inside OOL OOL FTPOutside OOL AOL FTP___________________ Also, I have found that it helps to reboot the router and PC every so often. ___________________ This is also not a good time for accurate speed tests as OOL is have some problems in many parts of the system. |

My main concern are the speed differences or speed loss I'm receiving with the router(I posted the speeds with and without the router). Someone suggested changing the MTU for the router, and I don't know if he meant with Dr. TCP or not. As far as what else to do, I don't know.
I took the 2 tests(OOL and AOL) and notice a lot of speed drops and jumps(even without router). Is that normal? When I used to take the OOL speed test, the speeds used to be more stable. |

The router defaults to 1500. Alo, you set it in The Doctor. You can set it in the router here » 192.168.1.1/filters.htmsaid by Irish Shark: This is also not a good time for accurate speed tests as OOL is have some problems in many parts of the system.

I set the MTU to 1500 for the router and clicked "Apply" and then it said "settings were saved", but when it brought me back to the page (automatically) to show the changes, the MTU was changed back to "Use default MTU" and the "Enable" box was checked and the 1500 i typed in not there. I tried it a few times and the same thing happened. I don't think the settings took, cause I ran some speed tests and they were the same as before(w/router). |

The default if 1500. If the box is blank, then it is set to the default of 1500. |

Okay Thanks. Just one more question. Should I keep my software ZA firewall active, if so should I keep the settings to default(Internet zone:High- Trusted Zone:Medium)or is it okay to lower it. I notice some speed increase when they're lowered. Thanks again. |

I would leave ZA in place just as you have it. |

Router Firmware versionDo you know how I can find the firmware version of this router? I was hoping to hook up my Xbox to it and I hear there were many problems with this router and XBox live with firmware version 1.0. |

DL the FW from the Network Everywhere site. Then go here in your router » 192.168.1.1/help.htm to flash it. |
