Re: NEVER NEVER GET EARTHLINK FOR MULTIPLE COMPUTERS

This is the speed when only one computer is pulling the data. My upload is still pretty slow.
When I had called first the technical support my
SNR was coming -16 and then they went to safe mode and
had covad reset something and then it was coming at 25.

You don't appear to have enough upload bandwidth to support the download speeds you get. You may have 2 problems happening at the same time.

1) Not enough upload B/W (Phone Line or DSLAM conditions?)
2) Router falling down on it's knees under steady, but small packet loads.

I'd suggest trying a different router and then go from there.

you mean I should ask earthlink to send me a different homeportal ? since I just bought a new switch yesterday to rule out the possibility of a bad hub
thanks

Just to add before getting earthlink homenetworking I just got their regular service and that was a different DSL modem ofcourse. At that time I got my own liksys BEFSR41 router and configured the network myself.
It was a little better only but that was the reason that made me get their service.
It is highly unlikely that both their DSL modems are bad?????
I had the same setup before with directv DSL with the a simple old liksys hub but everything was working just fine.
thanks

Do you still have the Linksys? Try it instead of the Home Portal.

I have to agree with Doc Olds on this one: the problem probably isn't EL but with either 1) the router or 2) the method of networking.

I also purchased the Home Networking Kit and received the 2Wire 1000 integrated modem/router.

I then purchased a separate Linksys router to link a second computer via ethernet. This worked very well: both computers had fantastic download speeds and decent upload speeds (ADSL).

I assume you are also paying $10/month for that 2Wire HomePortal when all you really need is a regular modem and a decent external router. I found this out the hard way and sent my HNK back with the promise (from EL) of a replacement DSL modem. See this thread for more: »Beware of Earthlink's Home Network Kit

However, EL failed to send me the promised replacement modem. So, I cancelled EL altogether.

(BTW nice modem, Doctor Olds. Sure wish Earthlink had sent me one!)

First what is your speed supposed to be? 256/1500 ?

And you say your on ppoe. If it works anything like sbc ppoe you have a modem or a modem/router combo.
I have a modem and use the 4 port linksys router for my ppoe. All i do is put in the username and password and it does the rest. Maybe Earthlink runs it a bit different. But thats all i have to do and i run 3 machines on it. I have a 128/768 connect and i can have two machines running quake 3 with no problems and im 15.6k from the co..
I will have to agree with the other fellas as i believe the problem is on your end with the network setup. Outside chance you have a bad modem but not likely. Before you buy a new modem try your linksys from before. And make sure you have the latest firmware for you router and your modem both. There may be a conflict like this that the updated software solves for you.
Also if you are playing games and thats when the lag is hitting. Say for instance you have two machines trying to play quake 3. Both machines are trying to run the game on the same net port by default and most low end routers will choke on that. If this sounds like one of your problems message me and i can show how to fix that.
Good Luck

At this point I am ready to try anything and yes mostly it happens when we are playing something on line either it be a major game such as unreal or as simple as pool on yahoo.

As to the comments from others about line interference from other devices then it should happen to the affected computer by itself as well. Whereas in this case each of the computer works fine when online alone.

Also how do you update the firmware, I go to my
homeportal and it says all the software is upto date.
thanks

Check your cables, especially the one(s) attached to the modem. Had a similar problem on a friends network. 1 or 2 computers would work fine, but more resulted in problems. Turned out to be the short cat5 cable from his modem to the hub had an intermitant short or crosstalk.
