When will cable be available in my area?

Having just lost my DSL line due to the Northpoint bankruptcy, I'm exploring my options and cable is one of them. Unfortunately, cable internet is not available in my area yet. I've tried contacting both Cox, my cable provider, and @home to find out when cable will be available for me but can't seem to get any kind of intelligent response...well, I haven't gotten any response at all. Since it's available very near me I figure they must have some kind of schedule for having it in my neighborhood, and knowing this schedule sure would help me decide my course of action. I'd hate to sign a 1 or 2 year contract with someone like Sprint wireless if cable will be available in 3 months. Does anyone know how I can get inside the head of the Cox or @home to find out what their schedule is? Thanks in advance for any info

I was waiting for Cable modems when Comcast called me one day offering 18 premium channels (or some crap like that) for $5 a month. I told them I was not interested and asked about the availability of cable modems in my area. He said he would check (put the phone on hold) came back and told me that they would be available in October. I was excited. Well, let me clarify, it was July 1998 and he was referring to October 1998.

A year+ comes and goes and I constantly check the website for availability...nothing yet. I started having some phone line problems in January - March of 2000 so I called comcast@home. She took my information and "speculated" that they would be available in July (2000). I said great, and was again excited. After a couple more weeks of dial-up problems, I signed up for Bell Atlantic DSL which was newly available in my area. No fuss, no muss.....

About 6 months ago (November 2000), Comcast@home finally calls and wants to know if I am still interested. I told them I had a contract with Bell Atlantic and to go away...I'd call when/if I want to change.

So, as you can see, they were off by 2+ years on their original estimate. Good luck in getting a straight answer from ANYONE in the broadband provider industry unless you are talking business class services, where they can really make some money....

Unfortunately all this does is tell you if cable is available or not, it gives no clues as to when they expect to add service to my area.

I've been through, and am going through again, the same sort of lies with DSL...foolish of me to think cable would be any different. Sure would be nice to have SOME kind of broadband, it's hard going back to dialup after I've had DSL for nearly a year. Dang, I sure hate the idea of signing a long contract with Sprint, but that may be my only option.
