Re: Phoenix/Rhythms cutover SUCCESSFUL !!!!! WAAHOO!!

Does this mean that you are not using your Telocity Gateway/modem? I would like to use my Copper Mountain modem that I got with my PhoenixDSL install. I am not sure this is possible plus I have not received my new IP number from Telocity/Rythms. Hopefully I will be up soon.

Any idea when Rythms is to get you up and running?

I live on the east side of Cleveland, Rcihmond Heights, and I am still waiting for Rythms to set up IP to use with my former NP SDSL.

One thing I did learn during my transition (iDSL from rhythms) was that you are required to connect once using dhcp before you can use your static IP.
I don't know if this is a security thing or what, but that was the only change I made to finally get the sucker working.

You probably can use your Copper Mtn modem, but you probably don't want to in the long run. The Telocity Gateway/modem looks up your static IP address so the way to get it is to hook it up. To get your static IP, the Telocity brick first asks a DHCP server to assign it an IP address. It uses that IP address temporarily so that it access the Telocity database to find out what your static IP address ought to be. It then sticks that address in its internal settings and from then on you use it. After you do the install, contacting its internal browser page at 10.5.1.2 provides a wealth of useful information.

Now, if you have any problems with the Telocity database (they had me listed under the wrong phone number and they use phone number as the data lookup key), then in the meantime while you are waiting for that to get resolved, you can probably use your Copper Mtn modem. Just set things up for DHCP. It will then ask for a temporary IP address just like the Telocity brick does. The address it returns will NOT be your static IP address, but if you leave it connected, the DHCP lease on that IP address will last quite a while. Long enough that I could count on it when I was trying to retrieve files from home when I was at the office during the day. If that is good enough for you, then you can probably use your Copper Mtn modem for a long time. But if you want your static IP address, access to newsgroups, etc., then you will be much happier (that doesn't mean to imply happy, just happier) using the Telocity brick.

I tried setting up the Telocity Gateway but I could not get my status light to do anything but blink red. I called Telocity and they told me that my IP address would be the same as it was when I had PhoenixDSL service. They said same IP, DNS everything would be the same so I figured just to use my Copper Mountain modem since it is much smaller. On the Copper Mountain modem I get three green lights but I still cannot connect. I'm fairly sure that Rhythms has yet to move me over. Supposedly I will be back up before Thursday because that would be three weeks from when my order was placed with Rhythms. I doubt it will happen but I am hopeful. Only time will tell.
