4 port linksys with a 4 port netgear hub?Hello,
Is it possible for me to hook up my 4 port hub to my 4 port router and still have all the same connections as the comps are hooked up to the router. E.X. (ipx,tcp/ip, internet access)
The reason I ask this is I have 3 comps on my router now but want my friends to bring theirs so we can have more for a lan party.
If so are settings I have to configure on the extra comps?
Thanks -Steve |

Steve, it should work fine. If you have LAN DHCP and the PCs are set to automatically get connection via DHCP they should plug and go.
I'd suggest LAN #1 to connect to the hub. On the 4-port Linky, LAN #1 shares with Uplink so one or the other (don't use both!) should accommodate any cable you have into the hub. Watch the lights - they'll tell you when you're ok. |

Yes, you can do this. Make for sure that you do not use port #1 on Linksys if you use the uplink port to go to a hub.
Now you have to decide if you want to use Linksys DHCP to assign addresses to your friends computers or not. If so, you will have to go through the normal steps to set them up to get an IP from Linksys. If not, you have to assign IP's to all their computers along with gateway and subnet mask.
If some of them are using some type of PPPoE to connect to internet, it will have to be disabled, or in some cases removed.
If you are just having a LAN party, they will all need to be placed in same workgroup so that they can see each other.
One other thing, if their computers have not been tweaked for DSL, they may not get very good speeds on the WAN. |
