Chokin' Chickens

After doing some extensive downloading from various servers over the last week, it has become blatantly clear to me that Cox's method of capping bandwidth is 99% of Cox's problem, ie; the consumers problem. I consistently had downloads start at 800-900 KB only to stop totally while Cox enforced it's limits. I'm talking a 2-3 second pause here.
There were some times that the data seemed to overwhelm and Cox would have to pause the download a couple of times.
Very annoying, and most likely fixable.

I have had that problem at work before, but it always turns out that the server I am downloading from is the one choking, as other things continue on without any hitch. I've never encountered that with Cox HSI though (unless their route to Atlanta flaps, in which case nothing works at all, and yes, I have had experience with that).

no rate limiting

it's the type of downstream rate limiting they use. ie they don't use any, with it turned on the spike, pause, spike, pause would cease and you would just have a consistent @cap download.

this topic has been covered heavily in the comcast forum search for traffic shaping(forum search). depending on the brand of cmts being used and or IOS version numbers this feature is turned off by default. if not you just need something with exec privileges to do "cable downstream rate-limit token-bucket shaping" for each downstream interface.

Re: Chokin' Chickens

I have that problem as well...

I download a file... Stops, goes, stops, goes, stops, goes... not a steady stream of traffic... more like bursts. I also have that problem on webpages sometime.. Webpage will be loading and suddenly it just stops loading.. then it finishs. I also have to click links on webpages a few times sometimes.. because if you click just once... sometimes then next page won't load.

Me and CoxTech1 been working togather... and said the NOC didn't find any problems so they wanted to send a tech out... He just left like.. 10 mins ago. The tech said my power levels are great, which I figuered that because I haven't lost sync in months. I showed him the traceroutes and he was like "do you think that's the site having problems or on the cox network? I pointed out "cox.net" and the missing route on the traceroute and he's like "yup"

so he said he's going to get a HSI tech (advanced tech) out here to see if it's a problem on the cable plant or up in alanta. We are surely heading in the right direction.

Thanks for your persistence MJi1084, I also have the problem with having to click web pages several times.

I have found the local cox techs who come out to the house to be very, very polite and they seem to really care but sometimes it is beyond what their scope of responsibility is.

I just wonder how much support they get from their upper management on problems like these.

Well, The tech that was here like 2 hours ago said that it could be a problem with the cable plant or up in alanta... he said he's going to send a different type of tech out... They just called and supposed to be here soon... I'll post the results...

Just out of curiosity, and to make sure all the bases are covered..... Is there any hard disk access when this happens? I used to have that problem with BNR2. The end of the pauses and end of Hard disk activity were fairly syncronized. It was eliminated when I moved BNR2 and it's databases to a ramdisk.

None that I'm aware of.
It's true what was said earlier about bursts also. It just seems that Cox has created its own bottleneck.

Not having that problem in NOVA. Everything has been stable as can be since cutover to new system. Downloads are constant and at max rate of distant server. Let me know what site you were having that problem with. I'll let you know the results from here. If it duplicates same problem it has to be the distant server.
