Re: Telocity IDSL ON or OFF

Ron,

I am still waiting in Northern California. They tell me that Pacific Bell (the local phone company) has agreed to take my circuit. I'm a little sceptical since they don't offer IDSL to new customers. However, I have no other options, so I am just waiting. My green light is on, as well, for whatever that buys me. Megapath is ready to offer me service, but at a much higher price, plus equipment and installation. Telocity tells me there will be no change in price. So, I continue to wait.

By the way for the dial-up, I had to enter my user name in all caps followed by @telocity.com. Once I made that change it worked fine.

Wow deja vu, I just got off the phone with Telocity. First, I have to say, everybody I speak to there has been very nice and tried to help as best they could. That’s not to say that Telocity is giving out the information I think they should.

Anyway, The first number I called put me through to a young lady that did not seem to understand much about the technical details but tried to get me what information she could. She told me that Verizon (East Coast Bell) would be taking my circuit. I explained to her that as far as I know Verizon was not doing IDSL and I didn’t they would just do it for me. I’m not sure she understood IDSL from a CD player but keep saying that’s what on my order but no date for install.

I gave up with her and called another number which got me a young man that knew a bit more but not much. I told him my story and:

He said my order is Verizon.

I said they don’t do IDSL and he said right, it’s for ADSL.
But, I say, every DSL provider keeps saying I’m too far for ADSL, (I’m on the edge and have always thought if some one would try I would get more bandwidth than IDSL) Verizon won’t sell me ADSL.

Well, that’s what the order says. It also says you don’t need a modem.

Yes, that’s right I don't need a modem if your talking IDSL, I’m sitting here looking at it, but if it’s ADSL I need a modem.

Well, check back in a week, he says.

I’d like to know what’s going on sooner so I can make a decision but now they have me hooked. If they can convince Verizon to at least test an ADSL modem on my line it’s great. I think I can get at least double IDSL out of it. So, the wait continues.

The Dial up problem was that they used my original numeric password instead of the new one I use for email. I get a feeling information is not flowing too fast and freely there. There seem to be several databases of info which don’t match on all of the data.

What a Circus! It'd be a lot more entertaining if I was watching happen to someone else. To pour salt in the would I was over my sisters and on her Comcast cable modem, the thing screams compared to what I'm use to.

Ron,

I had exactly the same frustrating conversation with Telocity when they told me that Pacific Bell had accepted my order. Almost word for word. I can only figure that although Pac Bell soesn't offer it to new users (likely because it is too expensive), they accepted it as part of picking up a large batch of DSL customers. I'm figuring that although Northpoint provided the circuit, and the equipment is now owned by AT&T, it is still in the Pac Bell office. So if they can just move it over, everything else is in place, including the line to my house which they also own. So hopefully, it would be an easy switch. This is, of course, all speculation, and probably a little wishful thinking. I'm around 20K from the CO so I'm quite sure that ADSL is not going to happen. My fear, of course, is that Pac Bell hasn't realized that my line is IDSL. But until I hear otherwise, I remain ever hopeful.

When I first called Telocity, the rep said that I would be switched over to Verizon, he did not have any idea about IDSL. Called again a few days later, was then told that my new provider would be Pacific Bell! As I live in Morgan Hill and Verizon is the ILEC, I questioned this, despite talking to a supervisor was not able to get any sense out of Telocity.

Checked with Covad, the 3Com modem is not compatible with the Covad DSLAM so if I switched to them would need to start from scratch with a new modem and a new line would have to be provisioned, took 3 months the last time.

When the ADSL folks have been switched and things calm down the IDSL “exceptions” will probably get some attention and we will either get a “Dear John” letter or hopefully connected again.

My modem is still connected to the DSLAM and Northpoint’s plug pulling was very wrong. Disappointed that the PUC did nothing.

Pleased to see that there are other IDSL users and I’m not alone.

berron - looks like you got the same response from Telocity that I did. Rather than type all of it out again, you can see my post "Argh Telocity" right here. In brief, I haven't heard a peep from Telocity, so I called them. (as of now my connection is still up - I can't figure that one out, though of course I am not complaining....) I also have IDSL through Telocity - Telocity tells me they are switching me to Verizon. That surprised me since I checked Verizon's web site and they say they don't service my line. So, I called Verizon myself and they (Verizon) tells me they can't service my line due to the line quality (or something along those lines) and I am also too far from the CO for ADSL ,which is consistent with every place else I check - I'm just about 18,000 ft away so the best I can get is IDSL.
At least I know I'm not the only one getting this story. For now I'm just waiting in the event that they can somehow magically switch me to Verizon though I am not sure how that would be possible due to my distance and particular phone line....
