360 hints

I'd just like to let everyone know. I've been testing the 360 modems that are in development for the past few weeks. They are physically 1/4 the size of the 180 modems and can stand upright or lay on their side. They will have the ability for ethernet or USB connections. The real deal is in the acceleration software that is being developed. A company called Flash Networks is developing the software being used called NettGain. There are two versions being developed, 1000 and 2000. The 1000 software is much like a proxy type setup and accelerates the connection through this software. It runs pretty damn well for basic internet usage (web, mail, news, FTP). The real key is getting the proxy ports setup correctly. This will be the software most likely to go out in the public roll-out in a couple weeks.

The other software ,2000, is a much better design. It is a completely transparent interface where it will accelerate ALL TCP and (i think) UDP ports without any special configuration. This software is pretty damn close to being perfect, but has slightly more bugs then the 1000.

The eventual Goal is to implement the NettGain 2000 type software on the actual hardware inside the modem box so that there would be a minimal amount of interaction on the customers side with dealing with the software.

At any rate, I just wanted to give everyone out there a little insight as to the product being developed by the hard working engineers at starband. It really will be an OUTSTANDING design when it's complete, so just try and wait a little longer and you'll eventually get the speed and service that you deserve.

Hey labmonkey!
Have you heard anything about Macintosh users and new starband modems? I've heard they have been putting us off, and I thought it was due to the wait for a new modem. What about use with a standalone wireless router - like Airport (WI-FI) technology? Usually all that it needs is a ethernet port.

When this new model modem comes out, what will the cost be to get that instead of the 180 model?

Re: 360 Speed Test Results, 7/22/2001

The following Speed Test Summary charts show summaries of the speed tests in the DSL reports speed test archive as the 360 modem was deployed in July. The most recent speed test summary is for 7/22/2001 the heaviest line on the charts. The most frequent download speed test result now that the 360s are coming on line is 650Kbit/sec. Upload speed are improving as well.
