i saw those ads...i wondered what service they were selling for so cheap...wow...rogers customers must be really happy about that...first off, its half the price for the same network, secondly, all the extra customers fill up the nodes and bog the service down for everyone on the node...hehehe...i love it.;) |

I posted in the news section about this a while back (the National Post article is no longer available). Nosing around the 3web website....... Availability is by phone call only; no checking TN or address online, and no online signup either. Technical requirements says no Mac OS support. For both cable and ADSL, Ethernet connections are available but not supported by phone, while USB connections are. I can't seem to link to the page about how they manage to keep their prices so low, they speak about their "Selective Accessibility Service", about which they state: quote: During peak periods of Internet usage - say, 6 to 9 at night, SAS locks on to a given percentage of identified network abusers and terminates their connections so that regular 3webXS customers can enjoy a premium Internet experience. Abusers are free to reconnect again and again, but they will instantly be targeted and disabled until the peak period has passed. Don't worry - in order to qualify as an abuser, you would essentially have to live in front of your computer.
Abusers beware! You are being watched! |

Wow! thats pretty heavy to be cutting people off like that! Sounds like a good way to get rid of the heavy bandwidth users fast! I live in front of a computer, I use a router so I'm always connected and my wife and I have used a whole 3.5GB this month! Wonder if I would be cut off? lol [text was edited by author 2003-08-29 22:45:57] |

Hey! You're making it look like I said that! Please attribute the quote to 3web, not me! I guess that means you can't download the latest version of Linux/BSD or update your Windows OS during peak hours. It's a bit draconian in wording, but I'm really curious how they chose to implement it. |

If it means the price will stay cheap, I'm all for tough love. |

Opps sorry about that didnt mean to imply you were the original author of that, Its been revised. Im not totally against this per se in that it is half the price therefore you cant necessarily expect them to let all loose on their backbones. They would loose alot of money! They should have a "Live in front of the computer" option for the heavier users too though |

I'd be interested to know exactly what they consider excessive usage? 40GB? 50GB? Maybe as low as 2GB? For $20/month, who knows. I'll certainly be following this as third-party cable offerings are sure to pop up in other areas like Cogeco and Shaw territory. Might give the cable companies a reason to reduce their Lite package prices. |

I suspect the prices are low since they intend to just piggy back the customers on their existing network backbone. I know some people who used 3web when it was free, and when they went pay-only they kept their custom login-software for dialup users. So they may implement that as well for high speed. (meaning perhaps no routers or other intermediate devices) Their custom software has the ability to deliver ads to the client and cannot be disabled without disconnecting.
Also, they will have to provide all the email support and tech support, which is really what costs Rogers money. I wouldn't expect blazing fast speeds with this service, while the connection via cable will be fast, I don't think they have the backbone to support high speed connections at the same speed as Rogers.
Of course this is all speculation. Only once the first customers trickle in here will we know for sure.
Regards,
Savant |

They have web signup, I was talking to their Techs and it looks like there is a 6 gig limit on high speed then you are cut off high speed. They give a 56K dial up account to each high speed user so after 6 gigs you are dial up. But if Rogers goes down you have the backup dial up. So heavy users due not use. |

Is it only Cable, or do they also provide ADSL service? |

Had their ad dropped into my mailbox yesterday, and I was really interested. I'm currently on the Rogers 'Lite' connection, so saving $5 bucks a month AND getting regular connection speeds would be great. Only thing is you have to buy a modem... |

I phoned these guys up last week asking for a friend of mine. The price is $24.95 a month, not $20 and to get that rate you also have to buy their Long Distance package. Otherwise you pay full rate at $29.95 per month plus you have to buy the modem. I'll stick with Golden thanks... |

But at least it'd be a DOCSIS Modem ...you wouldn't have to fight them to get one instead of a Surfboard/TeraPro that Rogers might give you... |

Well, Rogers is still selling their "Lite" package at $34.95 a month, so the savings are there. I'd go for the DSL, but not sure if it will work with Sprint being my new local carrier. |

Even if you pay the $29.95 without the long distance that is still cheaper then anything I have seen from real high speed (not the "lite" stuff). This is Rogers full speed resolded. |

3web SAS applies to Dial-Up internet as I have used 3web in the past. 3web HighSpeed internet services is basically as posted above reselling internet. They started out as a free internet company with the ads, but when the free internet stuff disappeared, they offered dial-up @ 10 bucks a month. Their dial-up gave me excellent speeds, close to the maximum you can get with V.90! So I was impressed, although I am on their waiting list for the HighSpeed internet.
By the way, I would download a lot + I do live in front of my computer, but I was never disconnected more than twice a month. Also, I was never temporarily banned, so SAS isn't that bad.
3web does not give tech support for free. It costs money. E-Mail support is free though. |

They just want to suck you in. They lied to us in the past about providing free internet. Leaving us out to hang afterwards. And it was always lousy. Its not worth it. |

Well, it was understandable as those ad supported ISPs were never really running on a viable business model, it was just one of those interesting ideas that popped up during bubble. Now most of them (freeweb, altavista, freedsl/winfire et al.) are gone with only UnitedOL (Juno/Netzero/bluelight) left. [text was edited by author 2003-09-13 15:50:03] |

I am a dialup user with 3web. The speed sux, ping to everywhere is 100% pocket lost now (although i can still surf). speed test is 19k, connected at 36000bps... but for this price, I am still happy about it. |

Re: 3web reselling Rogers high speed for $20I am using 3web ADSL for 2 weeks and its been hell for me: First my download speed is 128kbts/sec NOT 1.5Mbts/sec like they advertised. Second they are the meanest tech support people I have every seen. I have called like 20 times to solve my speed problem and all I got was go $%#@ your self. This is the last day I gave them to make it up to me but I dont think they will. When I talked to the mananger he was really rud and didnt care about me. I think that I will disconnect tomorrow. May be I am not the only one with this problem. |
