Cant Connect to Registration Server

while reinstalling sbc yahoo on my dads pc ive run into some problems
Everything is hooked up correctly.. It goes to step 4 of 6, then it reboots , downloads a few more files , then attempts a connection. It makes a connection ( i see the flashing green computers ) , but it doesnt connect to the server... and it doesnt light up the last green box in the connection manager. I really need some help on this.. Thanks in advance.

What version of Windows are you running? Which DSL modem do you have?

BTW, you might want to register on this site. It's free and you can IM other people on the site among other things.

Congrats :)

Looks like a connect-no-browse problem. Here's what you want to do:

Stop the installer
If the connection disconnects, go to Start->Programs->Efficient Networks->Enternet 300->Enternet 300 and choose "DSL connection". Change the username and password to be the full e-mail address and password you registered when you first got the service (unless you username ends in @swbell, in which case, just use the username). Otherwise, right-click the 2 little green computers down by your clock and choose Disconnect, then replace change the username and password as describer earlier.

When you have the 2 little green computers down by the clock, go to Start->Programs->Accessories->MS-DOS prompt

Type the following:

tracert 151.164.128.2

Press Enter.

There are 4 possible cases:

Case 1:

If you see the following:

Tracing route to 151.164.128.2 over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 Destination host unreachable

Disconnect from Enternet 300, go to the Enternet 300 application on the Start->Programs earlier (described above), go to the Connections menu, choose Settings, click the Advanced button, and where it says "IP Configuration", change it from "Private API" to "DHCP". Click OK, then click OK again. Connected. Try browsing.

Case 2:

If you see the following:

Tracing route to 151.164.128.2 over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 20ms 30ms 25ms 67-92-128-16-adsl.ltrkar.swbell.net
.
.
.
10 60ms 50ms 90ms secure1.rcsntx.swbell.net [151.164.128.2]

(the actual number of hops, latency, and names will vary, but the point is you WILL see names in the last column). Type "exit", then head to Start->Settings->Control Panel->Internet Options, and set the following:

On the Connections Tab, "Never Dial a Connection" should be selected (or grayed out).
Click the "LAN settings" button
"Automatically Detect Settings", "Use a configuration script", and "Use a proxy server" should all be UNCHECKED - if any of them are checked clear them. Then click OK. Browsing should work now.

Case 3:

Tracing route to 151.164.128.2 over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 20ms 30ms 25ms 67.92.128.16
.
.
.
10 60ms 50ms 90ms 151.164.128.2

(again, the actual number of hops, latency, and names will vary, but the point is you WILL NOT see names in the last column), then this could mean several things - either the DNS servers are being set wrong, ICS is interfering with DNS resolution, or a corrupted Winsock. If you get this one, post the following:

Go to Start->Run and type "winipcfg". In the "Adapters" dropdown box, choose the "NTS PPPoE adapter", then click "More Info" and post what you see for "DNS server". IF there is nothing there, post that fact.

Go to Start->Settings->Control Panel->Network and post whether or not you see a "Internet Connection Sharing Network Adapter" and/or any lines containing "TCP/IP (shared)".

Case 4:

Tracing route to 151.164.128.2 over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 * * * Request timed out

You probably have a firewall running, be sure to disable it. if there are no firewall, the TCP/IP stack may be corrupted. Post back if you get this result and I'll post the fix.

If something else happens when you do a tracert (i.e. it crashes), post that fact. If you get one of the cases above but the fixes don't work. post which case (1-4) is happening

You can also IM me with the details if you want rather than a post.

wow... thanks for the detailed response. I'll try all the things listed. I'll be going to my dads this morning so i should have an idea about noon or so.
I looked to see if he had a firewall in use , but im not used to ME and couldnt find it in the network settings... so im kinda stumped there.
Thanks

I did as you posted. His problem was like case 3 . The names were not in the last column. After putting in winipcfg this number came up.. 151.164.1.8
I also followed the next set of instructions .. went to start, settings, CP , Network.. and i looked for an Internet connection sharing an adaptoer the TCP/IP shared.. if it was gonna read like that .. then no there arent any shared.. I didnt see any mention of shared.
any extra imput is appreciated . THanks

Your Winsock is corrupted. Follow these instructions:

1) Go to the Network Control Panel
2) Remove every entry that says "TCP/IP", some other things will vanish too (The Efficient Networks PPPoE adapter in particular). Don't touch anything else. Click OK. Answer "No" to the restart question.
3) Go to Start->Run and type REGEDIT. Click OK. Look for the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WinSock2 and delete it. Close the registry editor. Do not restart.
4) Go back to the Network Control Panel, Choose Add->Protocol->Add->Microsoft->TCP/IP and click OK. The TCP/IP should reappear (but the Efficient Networks PPPoE adapter will not). Click OK. Choose "No" to the restart question.
5) Go to Start->Settings->Control Panel, and choose Add New Hardware. Click "Next" until you see "Would you like Windows to search for non plug-and-play hardware?". Choose "No, I will select from a list" and click "Next". The choose "Network adapters", and click Next. From the "Manufacturers list, choose "Efficient Networks", and for the adapter, choose the "Efficient Networks PPPoE adapter", then click OK. You should then see "Building a Driver Database" and it will now appear in the Network Control Panel. Click OK. Answer "YES" to the restart question.
6) When Windows restarts, connect with Enternet 300 and browsing should work! If you haven't already, make sure that sbcyahooreg@sbcglobal.net username and password are substituted for your own.

I live fify yards away from him and my dsl is fine. ... Ohh well .. i'll start another post for this issue ..

I was having the exact same problem, I got all the way to step 5 in rebuilding the winsock. I have chosen efficient networks ppoe adapter, but it can't find a driver. So should I try to find one or should I reboot without it?

It should be on the CD. If it's not there you can reinstall Enternet 300.

I did finally get it up and running. It was the corrupted winsock. Man, that was a pain in the rear. The guys on level 1 and 2 support need to know how to do this. It was really frustrating to sit on the phone with them the first 2 days and not be able to connect, while they say..."geez it should work now." You guys should help them refine the S.O.P. on troubleshooting the dsl connection.

You deserve an award for this thread. Why aren't installation manuals written like that? Impressive.

Level 1 and 2 tech support are banned from doing Winsock fixes by SBC. It's not that we don't know how to fix a lot the problems, we are not allowed to.

A corrupted winsock issue is part of the OS. In order to fix this issue correctly you must edit the registry. Since editing the registry can damage the operating system this is beyond the support boundries of DSL tech support and would have to be refferred to Microsoft since it is an issue with the OS.

I know how to and have done this to many computers, it takes a couple of mins and is easy to do. As long as you know what you are doing. One mistake and Windows is rebooting and making strange beeping noises or only boots to a blue screen.
