ConcrapProblem with Comcast is they have no intention of upping the upload more than 256k. WOW is their competitor here in Michigan and a few other states and they already offer 3mb/500k for $75 WITH basic cable. Comcast better think of something better if they want to keep their customers here.

Actually Comcast was testing 384kbit upload in some areas, much like they have been testing 3Mbit downstream. So there is a possibility of them implementing this as well. So they are looking into it, the question is if they will go through with it or not. Edit: found link » 384 UPLOAD!!!![text was edited by author 2003-09-08 16:00:19]

Re: ConcrapI think that was a mistake. It was quickly fixed the same day and nobody still has that config anymore.

Comcast is $42.95 for 3mb/256 by end of year for HSI if you have basic cable TV. I doubt the price will increase, they are raising caps to compete with DSL. You don't compete by raising your prices. [text was edited by author 2003-09-08 16:04:25]

What Good Is It If ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?:I for one have a question - and this will not apply to everyone associated with Comcast HSI.
What good will 3 Mbit download capability be if during peak time usage periods you can barely achive 1/2 of the rated "potential" speed of 1.5 Mbit. I know, I know, speeds are not garunteed, and are listed as "up to", but gee whiz - where I live in Plano, TX (75025 - Independence and Hedgecoxe), from around 7:30 PM until 11:30 PM we are lucky to see 800 Kbit speeds. Off peak periods my connection hums, averaging 1.7 Mbit.
I would love to enjoy the new speeds if they come to our part of the world, hoever, it is obvious that our part of the network is maxed out. Do you think that Comcast will add some local capacity to help us realize closer to the new speeds if they come our way?
I have not really even raised a serious issue with Comcast about this because I don't feel like they'll take one persons word seriously regarding slow performance. ( I have been through the reboot the modem, send us your traceroutes - every looks good - don't see a problem) whenever I have contacted support regarding sluggish performance.
Anyway, that's my $.02 worth. Hope it gets better.

Re: What Good Is It If ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?:Personally, I have never seen my speed dip more than 10% of the max speed during periods of high usage. It might just be my area (western Massachusetts) but I certainly can't complain.

Re: What Good Is It If ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?:Frankly, the best connection I ever had was an SDSL provided by Northpoint (768/768 for $50). That was awesome and rock solid.
Once you get to 1.5 MBps, who cares about having more downstream bandwidth? Most sites won't load up much faster, and it's not like you can download night and day with the caps coming down the road. I'd be a lot more interested by uploads increase which is where the bottleneck is on my connection. And by the way, SBC is increasing my upload to 256 (for $30 a month, what a deal).

Re: ConcrapI know for a fact that there will be no additional price increase with the upgrade. Unless it is a normal yearly increase

They don't have to raise the upload cap, because not all of their cities have WOW competition. I'm sure they don't spend nearly as much money in cities with WOW. I sure wouldn't. I'd concentrate all of my efforts in the cities I could actually turn a profit.

I would like WOW, but they suck when it comes to rolling out. I live in Grand Rapids, MI and they have no plans to expand beyond Detroit. Therefore, they aren't a competitor to everyone in MI. In fact, they are only a competitor to those who live in Detroit.

Come on now, WOW has only been around (in MI) for a couple of years now? Give them time.

Yea, and they have no plans to expand in the MI area according to their customer service reps. As for 500k, that is nice. It just isn't a option for the masses. Only the lucky ones who live in a certain area.

3mb?
That would be nice, but so would the 1.8mb we're supposed to get now.
Here in Chicago, Comcast has had MISERABLE speed problems since late August.
Crap.
