I can't give exact #'s(My competitors read this stuff;)), But I can tell You that we are in the black and I use Raylink(The best deal for the price IMHO for FHSS!)for PtmP and Smartbridges for PtP. We are also starting to make a major push for new residential customers. Raylink now has "Client Stations" for $140 each!. It is awesome because it is a CPE and a router all in one. All I need to do is add LMR and an antenna. This setup will allow us to double our customers for half the price of a conventional CPE. |

I am a Newb WISP.
Auctually, just started last week. I am using 3 Linksys Routers, each with the piggy back amp, to cover 4000 sq ft. In my one week so far, I have 14 Clients. I use 128bit wep, along with MAC blocking to keep out leachers.
This is backed by 6megabit SBC Business DSL, which suprisingly at peak times, is running at only 1-2megabits. Clients seem very happy for having up to 6 megabit broadband for only $20/month O_O

Is it illegal to sell SBC Business DSL? If SBC find out you could loose everything! |

It might not be illegal but just recently I know someone that lost their cable connection in the city for what they called excessive use. They had a choice either to loose the connection or pay like over 11 times the price. Just think if you got 15 clients on that connection. Ouch, it would be hard to explain. |

Did your link budget calculations tell you to use the amps? Seems like a lot of power to cover 4000 sq ft. |

"Did your link budget calculations tell you to use the amps? Seems like a lot of power to cover 4000 sq ft."
A lot of power to cover 4000sq ft??? Not really. Each router with the linksys amp covers about 2000 feet(rounding down). It auctually just barely covers 4000sq ft. Basically. It's a large sub-division. I sould auctually add another, but I got 2 routers together from someone i know. Then, the other router and piggy back amp i got from ebay. Quite cheap.
When I ordered the DSL 3 months ago, I asked if I were allowed to resell bandwidth. I was told by my rep that I am allowed to only on Business class.

I don't know what they call large up there, but around here 4000sq ft is just a large house! |

Excessive use. I also asked the SBC Rep if their were Data Transfer Restrictions of any kind. He replyed that their is not. |

I think it is good. It's enough to cover the sub-division. Some 30-40 residencys. That is, they are side-by-side homes. Like condos.
[EDIT] auctually, 2 of the routers are covering the sub-division. The first one is just to beam the signal to the second, the second relays the signal to the third. [text was edited by author 2003-09-27 23:18:41] |

I would never base my business plan on just what a representative told me. Always read the "Terms of Service". For instance, all of the TOS that I can find for SBC DSL (residential or business) include the following condition (or similar wording): " 8. USE LIMITATIONSE. The Service has been designed to be used at the residence or business at which it was installed. You may not allow other residences or businesses to connect to your Service or re-sell your Service in any manner. Such action may be subject to immediate termination and you will be charged termination fees, if applicable." Any chance you have a link to the TOS you are operating under. Many here are always interested in finding new backbone providers which allow resale of the service. |

guess i'm screwed. I was planning on ordering a T1, I guess I will move the wireless to that.

Once Citys become somewhat saturated with service it will be interesting to see the telco's and cable co's start policeing their TOS's. Think about all of the businesses that are reselling by means of a hotspot with cable and dsl lines. It might be a while but I figure it will not be too long. Just a rumor but I have heard here that cable will soon be going to a tiered service. If you wanna play then you gotta pay thing. Just recently they raised rates $5.00 for customers not on CC Auto Pay. I wonder if they are having problems with accounts recievables? hehe |

Exalted Host, before you decide on a T1, look into a 1.5 SDSL. We have ours through Megapath. We pay $322 with all the IP's we can justify and the reliability has been far better than we expected. Keep in mind though, that many people consider anything other than a T1 a liability. In our neck of the woods a T1 goes for around $900, obviously, it's far easier to break even with $300 than $900. As a matter of fact, we broke even within a couple of weeks of going live. |

Sounds good. I will check into it. The main reason I am going with SBC right now, is because their relay is 22ft from my door I get before all these viruses going around causing all this traffic, I was getting 11ms pings to yahoo. Not to mention, I am at the edge of virtually every DSL provider. I got a T1 quote for $550/month+200 install. So I am thinking. Thanks agian, Chris |

Can you point me to a link for the Raylink "Client Stations". I can't find it on their site. TIA |

Chele and Exhaulted Host,
Go with the T1. The cost for that SDSL line is WAY out of whack. The biggest reason to go with a dedicated T1 circuit, is that you're not going to be a victim of oversubscription, which is not the case with xDSL lines or Cable connections.
Good luck, and keep us posted, though. |

We currently have 6 towers, totalling over 200 customers, bridged together. Running some hot spots over these, and also we have another tower with almost 100 customers on it and 2 hotspots. Of course it's tough to make money on this alone, so we also have apartment complexes that we run Tut Espresso equipment in, and in one we have our service shared to a neighborhood next to it via wireless. We then have 2 neighborhoods that have 11 and 13 people in each of them. So altogether somewhere around 500 customers. |
