anon posted : The reason why the filters were removed is because Comcast wanted to make it cheaper for customers by having them doing their own installs - no truck roll, less cost. It was the number one thing customers wanted. The trade off is that Uncle Joe can destroy the service to a bunch of customers with a crappy install (yeah, that sucks but in a world that caters to stockholders it's hard to explain the Uncle Joe Theory). Going back to remove the filter takes away any potential cost savings, and if a tech is already there then he may as well do the install, too. Cha-ching! You can't have it both ways.

In areas where professional and affluent people live they prefer to spend their time doing something else rather than stealing cable or messing with the lines. As such, speed and reliability issues are rare, and when they do occur they are often problems outside and not caused by them. It seems the poorer the area the more prone it is to stealing, vandalism, and Uncle Joe and that equates to speed and reliability problems. Sorry, but it's true.

As for your nephew, well, the grass is always greener on the other side, isn't it?

By the way, I've lived in the same house for almost 15 years and my cable has never needed a service call. Yet the industry wide average is over 2 service calls per customer per year. What this tells me is that most of what goes wrong is inside the house where the customer controls what happens. Statistics on repairs show this to be only too true.

When it comes to modem speed and reliability a sad and unfortunate fact is that your friends and neighbors are often the ones causing you heart ache.

madmix posted : Didn't the former ATTBI subscribers get added to the group of Comcast customers and aren't they now being routed through the Comcast network infrastructure? Otherwise why did my email name have to change?

Also, why would Comcast want "Uncle Joe" to install his own cable internet service if he's dumb enough to use 22 gauge speaker cable to connect the cable line to his garage radio. Seems like they're shooting themselves in the foot. Put the filters back Comcast and let the techs do the installs (or at least leave the filters in place until someone orders HSI. Then send a tech to just remove the filter before the hardware arrives to the customer).

BTW... My nephew's cable company (Cablevision) let's their customers do HSI self installs (so I assume they have the filters off). His internet service is rock solid and he gets at least 1900 / 300.
[text was edited by author 2003-10-01 16:07:17]

anon posted : Hey Madmix,

Believe it or not, Comcast and AT&T are the same exact thing. The only thing that changed is the name. The same people work there, with the same equipment, the same routing, and the same everything else.

The one thing that did change with AT&T/Comcast change is that AT&T used to put filters on all the lines of anyone not having modem service. Comcast has taken all these filters off so customers could do their own installs without waiting or paying for a truck roll. Those filters blocked out the garbage from the customer's houses that would pollute and slow down the cable network. Without those filters the cable company is now looking at the "return" of every inch of cable of every single customer they have regardless of the type of service they have. So when Uncle Joe brings over his 22 gauge speaker cable to connect the cable line to his garage radio and thinks that he's not hurting anyone he's dead wrong. He's hurting lots of customers. The antenna on the radio is picking up crap and sending it right back into the cable system on the exact same frequencies your modem uses. Now multiply this a few thousand times and you'll get the idea.

I know you think that there's more to the problem than this, and to some degree you're correct, but like I said earlier, 90% of the problems are caused by the customers. Judging from your response, most people are going to have a hard time believing this until they ride along with a cable tech and see for themselves.

madmix posted : All I know is that there were NO PROBLEMS when I had ATTBI. It all started when Comcast took over. I'm not saying that there aren't people out there stealing cable, doing there own installs ect... but I don't think that the impact is as severe as you elude to in your post (otherwise all of them must be Comcast subscribers because as I said... there were NO PROBLEMS when I had ATTBI.) It all started when Comcast took over.

Face it... Comcast took a good thing and messed it up. They are either oversubscribed / under capacity, have lousy network administration, poor tech support or all of the above. And they don't appear to be interested in addressing any of these issues because it's been going on since they took over (and probably before). That's why I dropped them as my ISP and I urge others to do the same (that might light a fire under their butts). Why should we have to put up with sub-dialup speeds when other ISP's are able to provide their advertised speeds.

Everytime I see one of those "we're gonna earn your respect" TV ads of Comcast I don't know whether to cringe or laugh out loud... Yeah right... Good job Cantcast.

Response to all you people who bitch about speed

anon posted : To all you people who complain about the frustrations of slow speeds and outages you really need to know that it's not always the cable company's fault. I work for a cable company and I'm here to tell you that all you losers out there who steal cable, add your own outlets, and otherwise mess with something you know absolutely nothing about, YOU are the ones who cause frequent slow downs and outages.

How many of you idiots out there go out and buy $8000.00 High Definition TV's and then try to save $5.00 by hooking up the new cable outlet yourself? Tons of you. You make poor connectors, use poor quality, unshielded cable, and then pat yourself on the back for the half-ass job that you performed. Meanwhile, all you've created is a problem for many other subscribers by allowing off-air signals to leak into the cable taking up bandwidth that would normally be occupied by your modem carriers. Then you call us complaining like stuck pigs and want instant service.

And how many people just go out and steal cable and really screw up things? We won't even mention those people who insist on parking their RV on their lawns and run over our equipment in the process.

All of this, and more, contribute to the slow speeds and intermittent modem outages. More often than not, problems related to speed are not caused by system faults, but by your neighbors. And then we have to go through the time consuming process of finding the exact house and then try to get into that house - something most people don't want us to do since they think they know more about cable than we do.

Do yourself a favor, the next time you see or hear about a person doing their own installation, stealing cable, or running over our equipment, walk up to him/her and thank them for your poor modem service. 90% of the time they are the ones causing your problems.

And if that ain't good enough for you, go back to AOL and your 56K dial-up.
