TamaraB posted :
Hi:

This has been asked many times... and is my worst problem with the befsr41! Fix the "loss of connectivity" to the HTML Interface when the wan connection gets screwed up.

When do you need the admin interface the most? When the connection goes bad (and linky stops responding on both LAN and wan ports. That's when it becomes unavailable; usually even un-pingable!

If that can't be accomplished, provide some form of command-line interface which can be accessed to reset the router without having to power it off and on; perhaps a telnet access, name/password and one command "RESET". Some of us use these things remotely, and the one thing we do NOT have access to remotely is the (non-existent) power switch.
Power-cycling the unit is NOT an option usually. You provide a "remote management and upgrade" facility, but no way to access it when things go bad and the Linky goes totally brain-dead (which happens often on poor and noisy connections). Use some of the wasted memory in the "helps" (a PDF file for help is sufficient help!) to do this if memory is an issue.

Also, please grep through these 140+ messages, and pick a few, most of these issues (from reading other threads in this forum) have not been dealt with.

Bob

--
Networking and Communications
Consulting since 1983
»www.blythe-systems.com

When hung, the Linksys status page continues to report an active connection. There is appears to be no difference between connect on demand [set at zero] and Keep Alive [40, 100, 180--take your pick]. If I wait long enough ( hour+?), the WAN connection will spontaneously start working again--briefly.

To clear the "hang", I have to go to the Linky Status page and do a manual disconnect/reconnect. Disconnects require about three seconds. Connects/Reconnects require less than two seconds. Behavior is the same with any of the three connected computers.

To keep the WAN link "alive" I've resorted to constantly running a streaming audio download in the background. Because this workaround does work, I think that I can eliminate any cable/LAN-side hardware/phone line quality issues. Also, using Enternet 300, I "lose" the connection less than three times a month running 24/7.

By the way, when I am connected, the TweaksTest gives my system an excellent rating.

dave posted :
said by HFB1217:
Also for the tray icon how about a speed of connection

It just occurred to me that the Linksys cannot possibly know the connection speed through firsthand experience--it's an Ethernet-to-Ethernet router (or maybe an Ethernet-to-PPPoE router if you want to think at that level) and has very little to do with DSL.

The DSL wire terminates in the modem. The modem knows what speeds it agreed with the DSLAM. The modem ain't telling.

So, a prerequisite for this is that the modem provide a way to report its connection speed to anyone who asks. And I'm sure Linksys will want an 'industry standard' method, not something that needs to be customized for every modem that exists. Anyone know whether this in fact happens?

That being so, if the router got involved, it would be so that a PC could ask the router to tell it (the PC) what the router was told by the modem. Depending on how you address the modem, the router may or may not need to do anything. If the connection speed were retrieved by IP address (e.g., some SNMP command), it sounds like all the router needs to do is to route, between the PC program and the modem. If the speed were retrieved by MAC address (i.e., some protocol running directly over the Ethernet), then the router would need pass-through support for this.

Actually, I don't see the need for a 'tray icon'. If the router did know the connection speed, it seems like it'd belong on the status page of the web interface, along with the other connection details. (NOTE I am talking about connection speed, i.e., what the modem negotiates with the DSLAM, not data throughput speeds or anything else). It's not particularly dynamic.
--
dave

anon posted : Since you asked: :-)

I posted the heart of this matter in another thread, about the fact that my BEFSR41
not doing DHCP with my Com21 modem. The whole story is: when I set it to DHCP my
IP address, it Does get an address but the address it gets is very wrong. It ends up
getting a non-routable address in the 192.168.100.x range rather than my
real IP address. I have to imagine that the router doesn't just fabricate that address,
so it must be getting it from the modem somehow. The only way I can currently use it
is to keep a static IP set in it. This works fine until/if @home ever starts swapping
IP addresses and at that point, I'll have to stop using the WAN port and let my computer do the DHCP (which it will do fine BTW) and I will then have lost the NAT feature.

Once my request to Linksys tech support came up, I spent nearly two weeks exchanging
messages with a very helpful seeming tech person, trying probably every possible
combination of settings (host name, domain name, etc.) and it just never worked.

I guess this is/was not a very common problem, else there would have been a solution
already and at this point, no one really knows why this won't work properly. The
final answer from Linksys was to just use the static IP.

If I want to have multiple computers on my LAN connect to the same Internet server, I have to make sure that the default client port is different for each computer on my LAN. This can be accomplished via a command line argument or by making a change to the config file in my CS directory for each computer.

If all your computers are using the same client port number and connecting to the same server, the router gets confused as to where to send the data packets when they come back in.
