Unix and Linux → updating python...

i have python 2.2 on there right now and to run a specific program i need 2.3. when i downloaded the RPM and go to run it i get:

rpm -Uvh python-base-2.3-1thac.i586.rpm
Preparing... ########################################### [100%]
file /usr/bin/python from install of python-base-2.3-1thac conflicts with file from package python-2.2.2-26

you could try doing rpm -e python-2.2.2-26 first then install the new package.

You don't say what your distribution is, Mandrake maybe?

If so, they might split python and python-base. I think they split the docs out too. You should upgrade them all at the same time.

i got it to work. i had to do a rpm -Uvh --force python2.3

it worked and i got the other program installed...
