I am slightly better than you, I have over 300kbps and btw their news server is not working again but there is no difference since it is so slow that it is as good as dead.

I have to admit...Golden's service has been crap the past few weeks. I really don't know what's going on with them now...ever since newgroups...

Speaking of newsgroups, I just tried to post to tor.forsale.computers and got a 501 authentication error.

Tech support just tells me they're working on it and can't give an ETA.

Slow xfer rates too. Getting about 400Kbps downstream according to speedtests.

I've been a fan of Golden's a long time, but with all the news coming out here about people being kicked with no warning, slowdowns and newserver screwups and Naz leaving, I'm gonna be prepared to keep my options open in the future.

Hmm. I'm getting slow and throttled speeds tonight (Montreal). The last time I saw something like this was 1 year ago, when I first signed up and they were having trouble with the servers being overloaded.

Also, strangely, I'm getting an authentication required error message trying to access their newserver. The past few weeks it was unusably slow (news that is--NOT the service in general), now they've locked people out completely.

I'm going to give them time to fix this since they've proven extremely reliable in the past, but honestly, things like this on top of what is already going on doesn't leave me with very optimum feelings. Plus we don't have Naz around to check what's going on...

I get the 480 error also while accessing the news server (12:47 am)from good old Oshawa, Ontario.

The worst part of it is they are so quiet about it, no PR or anything, wondering how they're going to win the "hearts and minds" of its customers????!!!!

UPDATE: The server went down about 2 AM for maintenance, and when it came back up, so did the speed.

I'm getting 185KB/sec, consistently. Let's hope it stays this way for the rest of tonight and this week.

Now I'm just waiting for the newserver problem(s).

But that's 2AM...the speeds are always fine then..but when it hits peak hours, the speeds suck.

Haven't noticed any slow down, but the connection has dropped. Golden has apparently ditched Giganews as their new server provider. The server info shows "mantis.golden.net". I'm disappointed, but this is no surprise. I keep expecting to get that call from them saying that there going to cancel my account. I'm already approaching 70 gigs for the month.

Midnight, next day, speeds are broken again. Slow and inconsistent.

The newserver has been switched back over to local NNTP at Golden, and while it works, there are very few articles available (binaries are out of the question). I hope this isn't a permanent solution.

Things keep getting worse each day. I'm waiting it out, but my patience is limited. Since this is Golden, I'm going to be more patient than with any other ISP, but that won't last forever if this keeps up.

I just sent an email to look.ca to enquire about the join up procedure since I own my modem and I heard there is a different procedure for that.

I have no plans at the moment to switch yet but just in case...the way that Golden is acting is getting worse every day...

You know, I'd normally laugh at all the side issue going on (newserver, drop in speed, etc), but this whole issue of a cap just has me feeling on edge.

I'm afraid that is what this will all come down to in the end, very little else will matter.

Well damn Rogers suspended me for using too much and I just signed up to Golden but I didn't have internet for two days so I couldn't check this post ... damn I think I might just call them and cancel it before they hook up my line

Do you guys think I can cancel without getting charged?

I never know Roger would suspend people for using too much... I thought they couldn't tell how much bandwidth each user use...

I think they can, as long as you have an IP address, there is a way to track your usage.

Greetings,

How slow is the connection?

NBN's last speed-cap was 40kb/sec

This is like Dejavu, from 1 year ago...

Golden's server is once again having problems. I called Helpdesk and they said everything checks out fine, but that isn't the case. I hope someone from Golden sees this and looks into the problem (the reason I'm posting this).

I just ran a speed test from Eastlink. First on Golden Triangle, then on Sympatico, just minutes apart (note this is on the same machine, I just logged out of one account and into another).

Sympatico gives me a streaming 185KB/sec, Golden is throttling up and down (as seen by the DUMeter graph below) and averaging about 40KB/sec.

Hopefully this will get corrected soon. Over the past year I've had nothing but solid, steady and FAST connection from Golden Triangle. I expect we'll get that restored. Things like this happen, the important thing is that it's fixed soon...

I would just like to mention that no one from Golden.net watches or endorses BBR in any official capacity. That has been confirmed by email from another person in another thread here.

Chances of them looking or caring about this thread are about none.

This kind of speed is now becoming normal for Golden....crappy. This is not the Golden I know couple of months ago.

I reported the problem with several of their support agents, even been in contact with one of the higher up senior staff to make sure they're aware of it.

The good news is, as of tonight, they're working on fixing it. Things should be back to normal speed-wise very shortly.

The newserver problem is also being resolved and finalized. They are sticking with Giganews, and there WILL be a speed-cap, but it is minor--probably about 128KB/sec (which is roughly the same as LOOK Communication's speed cap with Supernews). That's reasonable.

Don't fret, things will be back the way they were before.
