while it might be a bit much for the average user to do, the following method can be used to circumvent ANY copy protection and there are plenty of people who are willing to do this so that they might listen to their music wherever they want.

put CD in a discman
run a line from the line out jack of the discman to the lin in jack on your soundcard
play the CD and record it straight to mp3

people have been able to do this for years. even the popular players like music match and winamp have the ability to record from the line-in jack. just because the average user won't do it, doesn't mean there aren't plenty of people out there who will. certainly enough to keep mp3's readily available on free file-sharing services
