Conflicting Info from VerizonI just signed up for DSL through Verizon. 3 different people from sales tell me that they use PPPOE. Tech support tells me DHCP. Hmmmm. I live in So CA a ex GTE area but sales say based on my address\phone# the equipment has been upgraded to PPPOE and that i'm approx 3000 line feet from CO.
I have a DI-604 FW\2.18 router with two pc's running Win XP on a Charter cable connection 768/128 for $55 a month ($10 more for having no video) (ripoff). I can get 1.5/128 for $34.95 DSL, thats why i'm switching.
I know how to setup the router for PPPOE, but how do i do it, if in fact, they use DHCP? They are sending this modem in my install kit, WESTELL COMBO ETHERNET/USB DSL MODEM B99-211015-00. Is this a bridged modem? also I don't need their sofware installed on the pc's as i'm using the router, but my question is how do i get a username and password without using the install CD? Call tech support? Any info would be helpful

Hey Joes! I was under the impression all ex-gte is DHCP. You might try configuring for DHCP initially and see what happens before trying PPPoE. Can't do any harm (i hope). If it works, a "Tweak Test" would probably be in order. Let us know what happens! |

Joes, You may be the test case. It has been rumored that new customers in ex-GTE areas were going to be converted to PPPoE. They for the most part have been put on ATM instead of Frame, but had been still using DHCP. So if you are in fact to be on PPPoE, then the rumor will be true. Let us know, but I have to wonder if Sales automatically equates ATM with PPPoE. I would try using DHCP first. As for getting a user name and password without the software, you can use this website: » dslreg.bellatlantic.net/ ··· ch/startGood luck and let us know how it goes. |

Thanks for replys As for them using DHCP how do I setup the router for WAN DHCP My Lan PC's are DCHP. Or perhaps the router is already setup that way for cable? I'm a little confused. If they are infact using DHCP then I can't use my router to log on, but instead put the username\password into the modem config?

DHCP does not require you to log in. I'm on DHCP and all I had to do was hook up everything, tell the router I was using DHCP to connect to the CO and everything worked just fine. If you do need a username, then based on all the other services (newsgroups, web mail) I would say your account name is the original name for your email account they gave you. For instance, it maybe something like res09r12 and then your password is that with a string of characters added on to it. If nothing else you can call tech and have them tell you what it is and setup extra email addresses. I think you can change your username and password via their website » start.verizon.net/flarn |

Yup! Looks good from here. Power everything down before the swap. But you knew that Edit: I personally Would Not install the VZ software if it is indeed DHCP! |

I agree completely. I didn't install it and I'm on PPPoE. That's what routers are for. |

As flarn said, "DHCP does not require you to log in." I rarely log into VZ (web site) for anything other than (an occasional mail setting configuration check) but that's it. Gee! we're making it sound as if this should work out of the box and you will have a connection when you boot up the first computer. If you do get a connection, Verizon will test your line at » www22.verizon.com/foryou ··· oice=dsl in addition to the outstanding utilities located here at BBR of course |

LOL thanks fellas for the good info. I'm a little leary of DSL\Verizon, from a few years back "I HATE VERIZON" web pages. Anyway i'll give it a go on the 20th, my service on date, but I will pay for another month for my cable in case this turns out to be a hassle, either at their end or my in house phone wiring. I could just run a "home run" from the NID to the modem if that turns out to be a snag on my speeds. Verizon tells me I have 30 days to try the DSL connection out at no cost to me including the shipping\handling charge for the starter kit.

Yup DHCPJust got my install kit today. The modem is a westell B90-210015-04 Rev E.So I hooked it up it got a solid green rdy light, connected it to my router rebooted my the router and bingo new IP online..LOL just like cable, no username\password. My package is 1.5\128 and i'm getting 1300\137+. Already did tweak test, line quality not to much to do there as far as tweaking. I will retest speeds in the early AM to see if they go up. One question though. My service on date is supposed to be the 20th and Verizon says that I should not setup untill I get a email or phone call saying the DSL is ready. So will they beat me up, jail me, or cut off my service for using it now..LOL. Stll have my cable connection though. I just want to test it out to see if I want to keep DSL or continue to use cable.

Re: Conflicting Info from VerizonNo, you're good to go and enjoy your service. The most that will happen is if you have any problems tech support may not help you before your official SRD.
You will need your user name and password for mail and news server access though. |

You know that was a great answer. I just asumed they started the billing date sooner. But I loved that reply.

AFAIK, the clock starts as soon as you begin to use the service. If it is ready (can pull an ip) before the SRD, you do not have to wait until the SRD to begin using it, however, tech support may not help you as you are not 'official' yet. |

Will the existing DHCP accounts be granfathered in to stay the same or will they change to? Anyone have any ideas as to which is superior? DHCP or PPPoE. |

I'm in Seattle on Quest DSL (PPPoA) using DHCP, because the Cisco 678 modem is set up to supply the user name and password. I helped a friend in Kenmore sign up for Verizon DSL, and he hasn't been able to get online yet, two weeks after they said the line was provisioned. I talked to their tech support, and the guy seemed to think that it should be DHCP, even though it's PPPoE instead of PPPoA like Quest. The Westfall modem is just a dumb PPPoE modem, like the Alcatel I used on Bellsouth. Seems to me that something has to put in the user name and password after the modem's synched up, like a PPPoE program. Is Verizon full of it with their insistence on DHCP? |

The BBR-equivalent of instant message. Look up at the top of the page, just to the right of the Broadband Reports.com banner. The userID of the person trying to message you is shown. Click on it and you'll be transported over to the forum messaging page, where you can read the message and respond privately. dw |

Herdfan, thanks for the IM.
I'm on ATM in Seattle, with Quest. The Cisco 678 modem is set up with the user name and password, so I can use DHCP. Verizon claims to be PPPoE, which would require software to send the user name and password after the Westell modem syncs up, at least in my experience with Bellsouth DSL.
So what you are saying is that a connection can be made with DHCP straight to Verizon, with nothing sending an authenticating user name or password, an open line so to speak?
I spent an hour on the phone with a Verizon tech guy at my friend's place in Kenmore Saturday. He tested the line and swore it was okay, but all I was getting through different tries was a 169.xxx address in DHCP. (He said he would bump it up to the next level of tech and get back to us). Meanwhile, we brought the computer to my place yesterday and hooked up to Quest DSL to make sure it was working okay with DHCP, and it was. So that puts it right back on Verizon?
Seems like if it was using PPPoA (ATM) they would be using Cisco modems, what do you think? |
