Illiniwek7 posted : Well, like Hickerx said, it's fund to try and repair things. I'm happy to report that after about 7 hours of work this computer is free of the virus. I did have to reinstall most of my apps, but everything is working now. The computer lasted all day without the virus popping up again, and two more scans indicate that it is gone. Thanks for your help!
--
Oskee Wow Wow!

xengineer7 posted : I was experiencing the same problem on my son's HP 922C. I had to completely restore the system twice as trying to salvage it just made things worse. Turns out that a few weeks after the last restore the hard drive crashed and it was of course off warranty. Since HP didn't provide CD's (a hidden partition was provided on the HD) I also bought a new XP Home locense. I would backup my data as soon as I could just to be safe.
--
AMD 2500ASUS A7N8X DELUXEeVGA G-Force 4 MX4403 x 256 Meg Crucial120G WD HD

Illiniwek7 posted : Thanks for the suggestions. I've been trying out the online scans, but my browser keeps freezing whenever I use them. That's how I ended up d/ling AVG. I did shutdown system restore as well before I started doing anything.

I did use the remove tool from Panda that Randy mentioned. It seems to have removed it all, but left all of my executables not working. That's not a big deal though as I'll just reinstall or redownload. However, the damn thing still came back and the registry key popped back up.

NAV is scanning now, so we'll see what that does. I had to reinstall NAV too because the virus got a hold of it.

Am I correct in assuming that as long as that registry key is out that the virus can't propagate? If this is the case, I'll try to wipe clean all of the infected files without running anything to invoke the virus. I deleted the registry key and then rebooted to stop it from attaching itself to explorer.exe. Is this a logical thing to do?

Illiniwek7 posted : I'm pretty sure this is an operating system problem. The applications on my computer seem to stop functioning, almost like it "forgets" what is installed. This started with games not loading (UT2K3, Hitman 2, MS FS 2004). When I apply the newest patch to UT, it works fine for about a day. Then, it gives the "Encountered an Error" thing and won't start again until I reinstall the patch.

My mom was over and I installed Kodak EZ share for her to get some pics off her camera. Same kind of thing happens. It works fine for a bit, but then eventually gives only errors when trying to start it and I have to reinstall it.

ICU is also screwy. I update to the new version and it works, then the next time I start it it says "Old Version" and I have to reinstall the update to get it working.

Does anyone have any idea what could cause this? Thanks in advance.
--
Oskee Wow Wow!
