[XP] Do you have SYSTEM RESTORE running? Wow.. but the poll feature changed! That sure isn't how it worked before.. I just reinstalled Windows and in a while I'll go back to the Windows services and disable everything I don't need. For that I will use ELDERGEEKS website, just like last time, it worked great. I just want to know.. are you running System Restore? I love to max out my PC's performance, and I've heard multiple times that System Restore uses lots of resources... I want your opinion now. Thanks! |

Yes, using it together with Goback. No noticable perfomance hit (for my taste). Usefull safety net.

Every time I have had to use the feature, it never worked, and just screwed up my computer more. I have it disabled completely. As long as uninstalls are provided I'm fine, but when they tie that worthless system restore into your uninstalls it just makes everything worse. I went to uninstall one update I did a week earlier, but that retarded piece of crap would only let me do it through system restore which would have made me re-install 5 new programs all over again!! If had installed the update without that worthless system restore enabled I could have just removed that update, NO Problems... System restore is waste of resources, and disk space. |

I use System Restore, but I don't set the slider all the way to the right {max setting} which is the default .. that is overkill and takes up too much disk space, imho. |

Yes, and it has saved me on a couple of occasions.

I do too, and it saved my bacon once, after an unruly software install...
I don't use it, unless I have no other recourse, but isn't that what it was made for? |

In a word, no. I use GoBack, much better in my opinion. |

Yup on all 3 systems, I have actually used it a few times, and was really impressed, saved me from having to reinstall the OS. |

Yes, on my Primary hard drive (running at 5% system restore), have monitoring/system restore turned off on my data external hard drive.
And for space conservation, I tend to reset/turn off system restore every couple weeks, to clean up my restore files. |

I had system restore on until I went to restore my system and it didn't work causing me to have to format and reload windows. I now have goback and it's saved me a couple of times. |

I use it on my C: and D: partitions. C: is the OS and D: is where I install my software. It is turned off on my data drives, E: and F:. |

What about system restore being a resource hog? Noone really said anything on that.. is that a problem? And GoBack? Isn't that even a bigger resource hog? I'll look into goback though.. seems like lots of people are using it and like it. |

I find Sys restore to be to iffy and I had goback installed for a time and found it more of a hog. That's why I said NO NO NO. Of course I don't find the need to install all kind of iffy software or to constantly update drives. If it works I use it. If it doesn't then I either remove it or update it. |

I've only had this XP computer for a couple of months. I am still learning XP. I do have system restore enabled at the maximum for now as I have a large hard drive with little on it.
I used System Restore for the first time yesterday when I created a specific restore point as recommended by Visioneer before attempting to install a scanner and software designed ONLY for W98 on this XP box. So far, I have had no problems with the W98 Paperport software on XP (except that the scanner can't see the printer for direct printing from Paperport) but I still might have problems as the install was rather intricate as I could not install from the CD which XP rejected as being a W98 only CD which it is! Plus I had to use a non-Microsoft certified driver for W2000. I thought this very sort of thing was exactly what System Restore is for and was grateful to have this tool. |

GoBack is not a resource hog here. |

How long has your computer been on before you took that shot? |

Roughly, 4hrs 59min 57 seconds. Not that long but I've never noticed that to make a difference either. |

As to creating a restore point. If you do not turn off the Sysrestore service you can create a restore point anytime you want and even if you have the auto sysrestore disabled, as I do, when installing MS updates it creates a restore point before the update installs. |

I have a second HD that I use for Ghost images of my live HD. After I became comfortable with Ghost I cranked down the system restore slider to its lowest level but did not disable it.
I just checked and I only have two restore points to choose from (I presume because I have the slider set to minimum) which is fine because if I get hosed up for any reason I'll try system restore and if that fails I'll restore my most recent Ghost image that I refresh weekly.
So far...so good....knock on wood. |

Yes, and have been running XP for awhile now on three different PCs and System Restore has always worked just fine...Also, as others, there is no need to run at 10%... |

Yes, I did have GoBack but after reformatting a couple of months ago I left System Restore on and found it to work quite well. That was on XP. When I used System Restore on ME it was nothing but trouble. |

Restore is on. After about 7 to 10 restore points I either disable Sys Restore and restart with a new restore point, or use Disk Cleanup which will delete everything but the last restore point.
I have used Sys Restore twice in the past 2 months. The first time it failed, the second time it worked.
I believe Sys Restore failed the first time because I forgot to disable Zone Alarm and AVG. The second time I used Sys Restore I made sure all running tasks were disabled. |

I think sys restore is a piece of garbage.... have used it on a win2k machine and caused it to crash... find that if you are aware of your machine and don't try to install shady crap software you wont have a problem.. |
