Keizer posted : I have been using Zone alarm for awhile now, and have never had an issue with this. However, I was at my sisters over the weekend, and updated her zone alarm to the current version. She called last night and said zone alarm popped up a message. Its said something to the affect that the zone alarm true vector internet monitor has stopped, do you wish to re-start? So it sounds like it might be a common issue!

Keizer

sig posted : This may or not be relevant. ZA is designed so if something shuts it down improperly it also shuts down the internet connection. This may be the case if True Vector (the firewall engine) is not running due to some bizarreness. (I guess this could be tested by directly connecting the cable connection to the problem PC without the router, just the modem, and see if your connection is shut off when the True Vector goes belly up again.)

Now the confusing part (if this is indeed what is the problem) is how that effects the router and the local network. I'm assuming that the PC with the True Vector problem is the main PC whose connection the other PC's share, yes? I'm no networking guru, but if your other PC's are sharing the connection with the main desktop and if ZA is locking up the internet connection in Windows to that NIC would/could that also lock up the shared connection to the other PC's on the network?

It's late and I'm a bit fuzzy headed so I'm just tossing this out there so you can consider if this makes any sense or discard it as not relevant to your situation. Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling ZA to see if that clears up the True Vector problem?

cbsimkins posted : Thanks but I had already read the topic you linked to. No help there. Let me be clear, when the desktop locks out, can't access the internet and shows the message, it also locks out the laptop, which is a wireless connection. I have both in front of me and it has happened too many times for it to be a mistake. But it doesn't happen all the time. Also, I am running Avant Browser, which is an overlay of IE, so I try to be careful to exit that gracefully. But the symptoms are a lock, probably of the router. Linksys doesn't seem to ever respond to inquiries of this type so I don't even bother with them. I am focusing on just unplugging the router next time and see if that works. Then, if that is the source of the lockout, I will see if I can determine what combination of things works to make it happen or not happen. But it is not just the operating computer that locks out.

CBS

True Vector terminating

cbsimkins posted : I get the message in the Events Viewer: "The TrueVector Internet Monitor service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s)." "TrueVector engine: File "C:\WINDOWS\Internet Logs\IAMDB.RDB" was corrupt and has been copied to "C:\WINDOWS\Internet Logs\xDB2C.tmp". File "C:\WINDOWS\Internet Logs\IAMDB.RDB" was corrupt and has been deleted."

I see from other postings that some people think this is due to Zone Alarm. Well, it may be but I have a cable modem connected to a wireless router, an Ethernet to my desktop and wireless to my laptop and another desktop. When I get this message, something in either the cable modem or router(both Linksys) locks up and I often have to power down the whole outfit. Now I haven't yet figured out just where the hang-up is located, but my best guess is that it is in the desktop with the Ethernet link to the router, which hangs something in the router moving it to never-neverland as far as seeing the modem. When I address the cable modem I get a NA, indicating that it is inoperative. So far, I have been able to direct connect the modem to the desktop and access the net. So I don't think it is necessarily anything in Zone Alarm unless it is just not communicating with Windows XP, and that hangs the router. I would appreciate any real information about this issue as it gets darn aggravating.
