[XINCOM] Anyone?

Anyone with some Xincom (502) experience. QoS namely, but anything above the pathetic help file and Manuals would be interesting

I purchased the Xincom XC-DGP502 about a month ago. Can't say that I have an understanding of the QoS function though. Give Xincom's technical support line a call. They have been helpful whenever I have called. I have never had to wait on hold more then a few minutes.

How are you using the 502 - one or two WAN ports?

QoS info call to tech support was... disappointing - the 1st level tech knew nothing more than me, FCS! Second level was better, however, by the lack of interest in his voice I am suspicious of the functionality. I have not been able to test it yet in more scientific way, other than initiating downloads from all PCs and testing my VoIP (and pinging the VOIP gateway).

I'm using two WAN ports. I have Comcast 3000/300 broadband and Qwest 640/256 DSL. The dual WAN brings in both services and distributes them between two wireless routers (Netgear FM114P and DLink DWL-900AP+) that serve two desktops and three wireless laptops. It seems to work well for me. Nothing really fancy setup here though.

Sorry to hear you've had problems with their tech support. I think they are a very small company as I've gotten the same person both times I've called. Hopefully you will get things worked out.

Have you searched BBR for Xincom threads? I know there are a few more threads that have been started. You might try messaging one of the other Xincom users. They might have some experience with the QoS function.

I would be curious to know as to how one can implement true "aggregate" load balancing where one single ftp connection can be load balanced.

Anyone having any luck with this Xincom? I would like to hear more feedback about it.

Anyone actually seen a beta of this aggregate load balancing? perhaps this is another feature that they put a * beside and never actually deliver it.

I thought there was a thread started saying you could use a download manager to achieve aggregate load balancing over a FTP connection.

This equipment was purchased knowing they were going to release a true aggregate load balancing firmware update. I hope they deliver in Q2 as stated on their website.

February 18, 2004

XiNCOM's new "Aggregation Firmware", originally scheduled for March 1, will be pending a release date toward the beginning of Q2 this year. The XiNCOM R&D team continues its development in providing aggregation capability for the Twin WAN Family to support all popular broadband services. Any purchase of XiNCOM's XC-DPG502 Twin WAN Router before the official release of the new firmware will be eligible for a free upgrade. XiNCOM will forecast the new "Aggregation Firmware" at the suggested upgrade price of $99.

I have recently gotten the 502 to work with the Qos Service. They dont mention this on the website but all zeros indicates a wild card. So for instance my brother downloads using emule a lot and it seriously affects internet browsing. So rather than nag him constantly I reserved an ip in dhcp, and used his ip and set all outgoing connections on ports 4242-4672 to low priority. Then I set all incoming and outgoing connections on port 80 on all ips in my range to high priority, jus in case I missed a range of ports that emule uses.

I think BBR should open a Xincom section. Because I looks like it would be a well needed commodity. If anyone out there is having problems getting the Qos service to work send me a pm.

It seems that the aggregate firmware release is in beta at the moment. If you are intrested in beta testing the new firmware you can send an email to beta@xincom.com Its scheduled release is mid summer all though I hear it could be pushed back to early fall. They seem to be updating their website almost daily so we should know fairly soon. I have the 502, once I load the beta firmware I will report back with my findings.

Actually the 402 firmware was released several days before the 502 and 602's.

No I am talking about the aggregation firmware that will put both pipes into 1 download. I have 2 3megabit cable modems and would like to get 6 meg into 1 dl. They have a beta out for the 502 but jack shit for the 402.

What sucks it that I was told awhile back that this did support aggregation with a download manager. It DOES NOT DO THIS. That was the main reason I bought this router. I am dissapointed as of now. They need to get that agg firmware out the door for the 402. Because right now all it does is load balancing which I have no need for. I'd like it all in 1 dl.

Perhaps someone can explain how a router, no matter how sophisticated, can pursuade a server to download appropriate portions of a file to each of two IP addresses. It would seem to me that there would have to be a download manager at the server as well as at the client. Or else an intermediate higher bandwidth service that downloads the file first and then partitions it for download to the router.

Using an FTP "download manager" as an example.
WSFTP takes a single FTP and initiates multiple simultaneous FTP sessions.
Take a 4 meg file. WSFTP starts 4 1 meg FTP downloads. One starts at byte 0 the second at byte 1MB the third at byte 2MB and the fourth at byte 3MB. These are spread simultaneously across the two WAN ports of the Xincom. When all four file fragments are complete WSFTP reassembles the fragments into the original 4MB file. This works well IF the FTP server supports positioning the starting point of the FTP. Not all servers do. The same sort of intelligence could be built into the 402/502/602 and make the whole process transparent except for reassembling the pieces. I am curious how exactly the aggregation firmware will work. I am a bit skeptical myself. For now WSFTP Pro fills my needs. For the firmware to work as advertised it would have to support downloads other than FTP too.

Thanks. I was unaware that any servers could support an FTP request at some starting point in the file. Nice.

Specifically the FTP server must support the REST raw ftp command.

REST
Syntax: REST position
Sets the point at which a file transfer should start; useful for resuming interrupted transfers. For nonstructured files, this is simply a decimal number. This command must immediately precede a data transfer command (RETR or STOR only); i.e. it must come after any PORT or PASV command.

Glad to know that I am not the only one anxiously waiting for the aggregation firmware for the Xincom routers.

Does anyone else have the feeling that the big demand for the 602 has put this aggregation project on the back burner?

EDIT: When I called tech support and asked when this was projected, I was told in was in beta testing and they expected it to be released in the second quarter. I asked how I will know when it is released except to keep checking their web site, I was told "we will notify you". Since there was no way to register the product on-line or by mail, the only way they could have my info was the rebate form I sent in. I did get my rebate promptly.

I can't wait for the aggregation firmware for my 402. I want this stuff like NOW. I have 2 3 megabit cable modmes. To get 6meg into 1 dl is gonna be sweetness. Hurry up xincom! The funny thing is that it used to work with DAP download accelerator. But that was with an old firmware and even then it was picky when it would use both pipes. HURRY UP!

I have installed the new firmware for the 502. I am still having problems with the health check using http. It seems to pass the check no matter what I type in for the address (ex: selftst.com) that does not exist. Has anyone had any better lusck with http health check?
