Nothing Remarkable...

I had lunch. I returned to replace the straight-through wire from the NID to the splitter. Cut and dressed all of the wiring, completed my splices. Cleaned up some minor oxidation on some of the posts and restripped some oxidized wiring. New stats:

40.5db Attenuation
12db S/N

How could a little rewiring change my Attenuation by such a wide margin? Likewise, why would my S/N drop? I'll try to resynch.

Because an attainable synch rate can vary considerably eating up a users margin. Conversely a user who is well within range for 3 meg service could be DQ'ed for a defective modem that is unable to attain the required rate.

It's much better to draw a line knowing 99% of your subs will work at that loop length and working with the 1% who do not.

You can always move the line out it is not so easy to move it back in.

Interesting bunch of huey. Interesting not being aggressive in trying to get that extra $5 from as many folks that want to spend it as possible.

It's not huey and you aren't looking at the problem from all angles. The farther out you move that line in an attempt to get every last $5, the more trouble reports and complaints you get too, and they can more than offset the extra subscribers. Splitpair has it exactly right, it's a compromise.

The further you are away from the CO or RT, the lower your max sync rate will be.. How close are you to your CO or RT? If you are indeed at or over 12,000 ft, then there is no way your modem will sync at those rates you posted.

A good clean line at 12,600 ft (on 26 gauge copper) reports a max ATM sync rate of 4600 kbps, well above the 3072 kbps mark for the new 3.0 service.

I say, if the modem reports a max ATM sync rate of 3072 or higher, then the user should qualify for 3.0 no matter what the BSFA database says.

There are users right now that don't even break the 1.0 mark of the existing 1.5 service, whether due to line conditions or user tweak settings. IMHO if the modem can sync above 1472, then that user should be offered the 3.0 with the usual 'Best effort' statement...

My remembrances of kindergarten where sitting in a classroom sweating to death while praying for some kind of a breeze to begin blowing. Usually somewhere around 11:00 am the wind would pick up from the East. It helped a little but the School Board designers in their infinite wisdom placed the classrooms in little rows that ran from East to West with the windows on the North and louvers on the South as such very little of the wind made it through the classroom. You soon learned to try and get a desk next to the louvers as it was somewhat cooler there.

Thunderstorms where a daily event. In the afternoon they would form over the pastures West of 441 and by 3:00 had begun the movement to the East many times lasting well into the evening. We would spend many a night without power as a result of those storms.

Prior to getting a SunSet I had a TTC/T-Berd DSL line analyzer I think it was a model 1000 (hint). One fine day it got soaked so I took it back to the office and opened it up to dry out and to my surprise inside was an Alcatel 1000 that TTC had kludged off of.

Careful people. Qualifying for Extreme has many more factors than just signal levels.

Loop length, type of service (ADSL, IFITL, DFITL, MX), and a really flaky BellSouth data base, just to name a few.

The only way to know is to try on line or call.

Is there any way to check the attainable rate on a Westell 2100?

I see instructions in the FAQ's for other modems, but the Westell.

Take a look at the people posting on this and the other 26 page Extreme thread. The bulk of the posters are not regulars. The originator of this thread has a grand total of 2 posts- hardly a regular.

I completely agree that the regulars know better, but its interesting to note that even some of the most "reliable" regulars have differences of opinion.

My post was directed to those who aren't the regulars. It was just meant as a caution to those who don't have the experience of the regulars.

I fear that many who have qualified, will get the dreaded "sorry" email within the next few days- me included.
