Well if you compared the lease package (DHA) prices against owned equipment prices (which last I looked were still $5/mo lower per box.) no it isn't really.

Still with cable soon going ALL digital this will become a completely moot point. Even if Open Cable (tuner in the TV) does happen, the set will still have Smart Cards too that will still likely be charged individually.

Beside the so far WEAK FCC mandate for digital in X years...CABLE will YEARS sooner... is because cable wants the per set control too... as most ALWAYS have (some still even contractually... if you read them, state... but don't want to get warrants to prove or the manpower to go out and load measure if there is no lead AMP that makes it look like one set)... until most who could at least program a VCR figured out how easy stringing up another analog outlet was... and a cheap amp could even make up for signal loss in most normal cases.

Yes. Nothing is free ever. There is always a price to be paid by someone. It's just an example how cable companies and satellite TV providers get ammo to fire at one another.

Cable: See, you have to pay $5 per month to watch on a 2nd+ TV.

Dish: See, you have to pay $5 extra per month to rent their cable box.

Cable: See, you have to spend $100 just for the extra receiver.

Dish: See, you will always have to rent cable companies box.

etc...

Actually I used a DISH 501 single tuner PVR for my first year and a half. The ability to playback while recording goes a long way towards making up, but for the ability to record two things at once.
Pretty much I recorded everything and just watched stuff already recorded. And since most of the cable channels repeat for the west coast (at least Prime time shows) or have west feeds... it was rare to not get two things that were on at the same time recorded... though one would be 3 hours later.

I now have a 721 and the second tuner is nice...but the 501 was quite usable for one person.

I also think it's kind of low for them to charge $15 for delivery of the system. Hey, I know that in the course of one's life, $15 is nothing. But don't advertise that it's "free," when you force me to pay $15 to get it. That makes it, by definition, NOT free. And what chaps my hide even more about this is that some people aren't charged the $15 delivery fee and some people are. Yeah, and in addition to the contract, you still pay an extra $5 per month, for each receiver past the first. So you have to sign a long-term contract AND pay an additional $10 a month for the receivers. That DOESN'T sound very FREE to me. If the deal was really "free," they wouldn't charge the extra $10 a month for the receivers. They would have you sign the contract, give you the equipment, and make their money off of you on the programming/pay-per-view. You can split the OUTPUT of the satellite receiver (on ch 3) and send it to more than one TV (like to 2 TVs). Both TVs would have to watch the same channel at the same time though.
