Re: [General] Earthlink DSL Upgrades

said by jackknife:
2400 sounds about right. Covad's 1500/386 only tests at 1200/270.

Actually that is *low* for Covad and closer to what you see on BS provisioned lines (except the upload in this case).

On Covad you should be seeing closer to 1325/320 at least.
On Bellsouth you normally see the speed tests at 1240/220

Using the 87% rule, on a 3.0Mb/s (3008k) line, you'd see 2617k. A 2400k test result could be from a few different reasons:

1) PC needs re-tweaked for new speeds,
2) Busy speed test server,
3) User's modem not sync'ing at full 3008k.

Actually Doc, I am on a Covad line (Verizon territory) and am getting 1200 - 1250 down and about 105 to 109 up. I don't have the most optimum setup...I have the old style NID with a new CAT3 run from it to my Office.

I have never seen above 1270 down on any test server...

For those of you with an up better than 128, I say stay with that plan or go elsewhere. 128k up is extremely limiting, even with a 1.5/128 provision. I myself have contemplated moving to either Covad direct or Speakeasy to obtain a better upload.

I don't think it is low for a Covad line. It seems if Earthlink offers 1.5 mbps you get about 1.2 mbps so if they offer 3.0 mbps then 2.4 mbps seems about right. Not good, just that 3.0 mbps is double 1.5 mbps and 2.4 mbps is double 1.2. So both advertised vs actual speeds are doubled.

I live about 4500 ft from the CO with 25/21 dB noise margins. Actually that is the loop as the CO is only five blocks away down the street. This is a Covad line in the Chicago suburbs. Anyway, the absolute best I have gotten is 1250/314 and that is after tweaking the hell out of it. So I'm not surprised he is only getting 2400 bps out of the 3.0 mbps service. I doubt he would ever see that much more out of it.

I am switching to Comcast as they offer 3.0 mbps to both new and existing customers (no BS) plus it is cheaper, there are no contracts and it seems you can actually achieve the rated speeds. I will post my first speedtest here once I have it installed next week.

Again, using the 87% rule, a 3Mb/s download in the real world would be in the 2600k range. A 1.5Mb/s download in the real world would be around 1320k.

I think this 87% rule works for about 1% of the people.

Actually, 87% is the best you can do with PPPoE overhead. In (3) years, I never got that high. My best test ever was 1307k, if memory serves me correctly. I've seen a few people get 1325k but not very many or too often.

But you know, I've seen too many people on Verizon DSL (1500/128) who gets 1400+ and sometimes even past 1500!

Ameritech used to do something similar. They do this so that customers *may* actually see the ADVERTISED rates vs the imaginary "port rate" that they'll never see in real life. This is the DSL provider's policy, not Earthlink's at all. Covad doesn't do it obviously. Bellsouth has some southern form of math apparently in that they think 1.5Mb/s = 1472k when it should be 1536k (1.5 x 1024 = 1536).

What's funny (as in funny sad) is when you read their available PDF documentation, it says they provision (or should) at 1536, but when you ask them about the 1472 they claim it's the maximum based on a Tariff they are bound by.

It smells of Corporate BS.

I've got Earthlink DSL provisioned by Verizon in Northridge, CA. Any speed upgrades on the horizon for this section of town? If not, Verizon only DSL ($10 less/month) or RoadRunner looks mighty appealing. I sent an e-mail to Earthlink and received their standard canned marketing "We do our best, be happy." spiel. Ugh! I've got about 10 friends on Covad provisioned lines who are inquiring about why the new customers get the speed and existing customers get screwed.

I am wondering the same thing. Last nite I called EL and was told to call COVAD since I am an existing customer and that they could help.

Call COVAD this morning, first off could not understand a damn thing they said, I guess I am calling India, and asked about the upgrade - "You have the SOHO 1.5 by 256, would you like to upgrade your service to 768 by 768?"

No sh*t - what an upgrade that would be?

Finally I was transferred to someone else who asked if my service was working and then transferred me to a non-existent phone number.

Why is it PACBELL can roll out a 6000/608 service while COVAD and Verizon sit on their assets and do nothing.

I am going to DSLExtreme soon, I have 2 offices on DSLExtreme and not a single problem and they have real english speaking techs in Canoga Park.

COVAD has been able to roll out faster service. Via 3rd party vendors. i.e. speakeasy.

It's just that Earthstink doesn't want to provide their customers with faster speeds. Well I take that back, they only don't want to provide their loyal customers with faster speed :P

Yes - I told them last nite I would be cancelling my service on June 6th, one day after my year is up.

Considering their tech support seems to be in some 3rd world country like most large companies. I will be going with a local California ISP and not support Earthlink any longer.
