Explorer not ConnectingWindows XP. Explorer 6. Speedstream 3060
I usually have not troubles. Recently, I ran AdAware to remove spyware stuff that has been building up over the last few months.
Well after doing that, IE and NS will not connect to the internet. I am able to get to the DSL network, it says I am connected, but when I run IE or Netscape, I get a host not found error.
I have tried to undo the Adaware changes. No luck. I have tried a system restore. No luck. I have tried a different modem (speedtouch home), but the installation of BellSouth Connection Agent fails.
Any suggestions? thanks -kaz |

Check to see if it set any "Proxy" server setting's in IE. IF so, try removing them.
(Tools, Internet Options, Connections, Lan Settings....)

Good find sportsfan54 ! That is a very common cause of internet connection, but not being able to surf. I would bet this is the cause of the problem |

Go to your control panel and add remove programs...see if you have any windows hot fixes (all the way at the bottom). If you have a multitude (15 or more) this is the root of your winsock issue. These hot fixes are causing issues all throughout the broadband world. Do a system restore a week prior to when you were on last. |

IAW my last message...If the restore isn't working PM me and I can send you the WinXP winsock fix utility. We also can burn the files to CD and fed-ex them to you. I am not a fan of the 3060 because it is no longer supported, so let me know if you need a westell and we'll upgrade it for you. |

Thank you all for the replys. The winsock thing was the fix! I've got some work to do now to fix everything else I screwed up trying to fix it. I am now curious about the hotfixes. Maybe you can give me more info on this... |

Well, I've personally installed all the available hotfixes, except hardware, on several machines and never had one fail as a result. |

Could you elaborate some more on what you have found that shows that the hotfixes are causing this? I've I have an idea of what to look for, I can do a little "field research" and find out more... |

I haven't been able to narrow down the hotfix that causes it...Next time I have this issue I will post a screen shot. The last week I had easily 15 customers w/ this issue. System restore got 'em right up and fixed what looked like a winsock. |

I had this problem a couple days ago, but I am using a Westell Wirespeed 2100 (rev e). I am guessing this is the same case with me also? The reason I say this is becuase I fixed this the same way prior to seeing this post. I was thinking it may have been one of the updates release in the last 3 weeks or so. Also it seemed to always happen to me after I had been surfing the net then left my computer for say 30 minutes or more where it just set idle. I checked my Linksys router and it still showed to be connected but the webpages were not loading. Can I get that winsock fix if it applies to my case? I can give you my email or can download via FTP just let me know. |

Ah ha! It has nothing to do with a hotfix. There are a couple of virus files out right now that are corrupting the Winsock.dll file. Running the System restore will put that DLL file back. Mainly BKDR_Lamer, BKDR_Death, and a few others. » www.trendmicro.com/searc ··· =winsockRobby |

ASG5, it is not the hotfixes. It may be a virus that caused your perceived problems. I work for a company which would have put it's 5000+ PCs plus ~300 servers out of business had it been a hotfix. Again, IT IS NOT A HOTFIX PROBLEM. |

This is a great thread for many reasons, including the contributions of ASG5, and his great willingness to assist here. This forum could use several clones of ASG5, along with all the other helpful members (Robby, Dan, and some others too) who post frequently!!! |

Thank you everyone for this very useful info. I am up and running and a bit more cautious now.
information I have obtained from this and the AdAware site have helped me set up a cleaner, safer surfing computer. At least I hope so.
I have had ZonAlarm for a while, but ended up turning it off when I could not get my simple network to run with it properly. I have taken the time to get it set up right now, but I do have a question.
I am running ZAPro on the computer I connect to the internet with. My other computers connect using ICS (for now, until I get a router). Does this set up protect the other computers as well, or do I need to set up ZA on those too? |

Yes and No.
For the most part, any inbound traffic is going to have to get caught by your main PC before it can get to your other PC's.
BUT - I have a router and I still run ZoneAlarms on all my PC's. It's good for monitoring whats going OUT from those PC's. Never know when you might pick up a worm or trojan horse that might be trying to dial home.

I'm actually having the same problem, but when I tried to use the fix that was on the LavaSoft forums, it said there was no problem with it.
That being said, when I tried IE, it didn't work.
However, everything else does. And, I do mean everything; Netscape; MSN; even browsing through Outlook works fine. It's just IE that decided to take a long vacation and not come back. |

I would suggest a repair of IE. Go to Add/Remove Programs and select IE. Click to remove and it give you an option to Remove or Repair. Select the Repair. I don't know that it will help, but it sure can't hurt. |

Tried that, but with XP, it didn't work so well.
I'm debating whether or not to upgrade to WinXP Pro or WinServer 2003.
This really bites... |
