Fast Gaming LCD

I'm looking for a 19"+ fast gaming LCD.. According to tomshardware »www6.tomshardware.com/di ··· -08.html the Hydis 17" 20ms panel is the fastest one to date, but its a little too small. I'm looking for something a little bigger but with similar performance. 16x12 res. would be nice too.

For 19" or larger LCDs, you won't find many that are faster than 20 ms. Most of the 16 and 12 ms displays are 17 inches. Some of the large displays that have relatively fast response are:

Dell FP2001
NEC 2080UX+
Sharp LL-191A
Sharp LL-T2015

Im looking at the VP201 from Viewsonic myself.
There is a review here:
»www.gamepc.com/labs/view ··· b&page=1
I've also read that the VP201 and the Dell 2001FP use the
same base panel, but haven't confirmed that yet.

the dell 2001 is big, cheap and claims a fast response.. but from what I heard it ghosts and has a "scan line" problem.

can anyone confirm that?

also fast response time does not equal to no ghosting. the ms response that the manufacturers claim is an average rise/fall time. you can get a 16ms panel and still have serious ghosting problems when the LCD displays certain colors.

I have a planar 19".. on FPS games with bright backgrounds it does not appear to ghost at all. But with games like CS where the environment is darker, there are a lot of black->white and vise versa it ghosts all over the place. If i remember right this panel has a 25ms response.

I don't want to make the same mistake for my next panel.. I read the comparo articles on tomshardware and they recommend Hydis panels.. although it has a 20ms reponse time, it beat out all the 16ms panels. Its a good panel but i want something 19" or larger.

Samsung has the 172X, which is 17" and has a 12ms response time.

Not 19" like you're looking for, but the response time should more than make up for that.

You can read about my 2001FP experience in this post. I forgot to point out that I saw no ghosting with the monitor.

I dont understand what you meant by "blurring" on BF1942.

Download and watch this.

That's what was happening to me in Desert Combat, but UT2004 ran fine for me. Go figure...

Wow.. i got a headache just from watching that.

I get quite a bit of ghosting in half-life based games on my Planar 19" panel, but UT seems to run fine on it too.

I think what you are seeing is still considered "ghosting".. I've heard that black/white are the most difficult colors for an LCD to display and usually have the slowest response time. my guess is that there are a lot of little black pixels mixed in the picture and it ends up looking blurry.

I forgot to ask you.. were you running BF1942 in native 1600x1200?

Yes, I tried all resolutions and had the same problem.

Maybe there is something wrong with my eyes, but the AVI file you have up is Unreal Tournament and not BF1942?

Yes, I stated that in my second post in this thread:

Sorry about that I just read your post. Wow...that makes my mind spin...

But do you find it weird that the 2001FP would be blurry on a game like BF1942 whereas a game like UT2004 is fine?
Do you know of anyone else having this issue with BF?

Asking because I am really close to deciding on getting the 2001FP to replace my 17" CRT.

I am mostly a gamer, but will use the LCD to watch TV and movies in my room.

I would love to get the 2001fp myself but that native resolution of 1600x1200 is the same as my laptop. I don't like running my games slow so I wouldn't want that high of a native resolution.

Bunko, Here's a huge thread with a bunch of opinions and reviews of the 2001FP. And yes, I do think it's weird that I could run UT2004 without a hitch but BF1942 fell on it's face. The issue drove me nuts and I tried for two days to get it running smooth, but in the end had to reluctantly send the monitor back.

MrMaster, the 2001FP will also hit 1024x768 and 1280x960 resolutions no problem, so you wouldn't be forced to run in 1600x1200.

But your view area is much smaller in relation to the potential size of the screen right?

You can set the monitor to fill the entire screen at those supported resolutions. If you do that it acts just like a CRT, you still have 20" of screen filled up.

Postal,

Thanks for all the information and links to the 2001FP. I am still in the middle of reading that HUGE thread. But I've pretty much decided that I'm going to take the plunge and go with the 2001FP. I'm in Canada so the inflated price of $1549CDN applies. BUT, I called up Dell and asked "wtf" is going on with our Canadians getting ripped off for this LCD. They said they would give it to me for $1250 CDN. Better than $1550, but I am waiting for the $750 USD sale to go on and then call up Dell Canada. Hope I am making the right choice by going with the 2001FP.:o
