[DNS] 04-2005 Connection Problems - Discussion

The outage has been pretty much confirmed. Information on how to change your DNS is below. Comcast is aware of it and working on it. I reccomend switching your DNS for faster connectivity.

Edit -
For those who want to change their DNS but don't know how , see this FAQ entry.
»Comcast High Speed Internet FAQ »How do I change what DNS server my computer uses?

Some DNS servers I reccomend:
4.2.2.1
4.2.2.2
4.2.2.3
4.2.2.4
4.2.2.5
4.2.2.6
These are all DNS server addresses that resolve differently across the country. Some are GTE, some Level3, some Verizon, but are all VERY speedy and work well. Some also reccomend using the ORSC's public servers, one of which is 199.166.24.253. I have not used this server, but others say it is fast.

dadkins adds these DNS servers:
SpeakEasy Nameservers
66.93.87.2
216.231.41.2
216.254.95.2
64.81.45.2
64.81.111.2
64.81.127.2
64.81.79.2
64.81.159.2
66.92.64.2
66.92.224.2
66.92.159.2
64.81.79.2
64.81.159.2
64.81.127.2
64.81.45.2
216.27.175.2
66.92.159.2
66.93.87.2

ORSC Public Access DNS Nameservers
199.166.24.253
199.166.27.253
199.166.28.10
199.166.29.3
199.166.31.3
195.117.6.25
204.57.55.100

Sprintlink General DNS
204.117.214.10
199.2.252.10
204.97.212.10

Cisco
128.107.241.185
192.135.250.69

Quite a choice we have isnt it !

Mod edit for title change.

Yes...here in Lee County, Florida.

Switched over (hopefully temporarily) to 4.1.1.1 and back in business for the moment.

Hey - I'm just glad my damn connection finally came back. It was up early this morning, then was dead all day long, and finally came back online again I would guess around 9:15pm EDT.

Same problems here in Central Virginia. Verizon FIOS is looking very good at this moment when it comes out in late summer.

yep. Just started happening a few minutes ago. The DNS is frequently going in and out. It may take a few times for it to go through.

I reccomend in the future for us with routers (or even local machines) to hardcode one of the national DNS as our primary and the 4.2.2.2 as a secondary so we won't see these outages frequently. Once it settles down again, I will be doing that on my router if I don't notice too many speed issues.

Massachusetts, DNS problem too. Vonage works fine, 90% of web sites non-functional.

Having problems here in Michigan again.

I just got off the phone with Comcast to try and get a credit on my account for the trouble I've been having the last 2 weeks. They admitted the problem but said they would have to have a tech. come out and check my equipment anyway to issue a credit. That makes a lot of sense.

I dont truly understand what the issue was last time, There are suppose to be backups to stop this kind of thing from happening again, I guess they didnt work

Yeah it's called get off there dumb national DNS and go back to regional DNS #'s. Makes a lot of sense to put all the users on 2 DNS #'s exactly for this reason repeated twice in less then a week.

Yeah, just ran into the problem in the Chicago area. I resisted switching DNS last time, but after pinging the two comcast servers and getting timeouts I made the switch (to 4.2.2.1) and I'm happy I did.
