[new technologies] New ActionTec Router breaks Traceroute

I've had FIOS in Falls Church, VA for almost 2 years now (brag) and it's sweet.

I convinced Verizon that I needed the new ActionTec router that integrates the IPTV stuff and the broadband router. Got it, installed it, configured it, and it's great -- dropped 5ms off my round-trip times! Plus highly configurable and very nice interface.

My problem is that now my traceroutes are broken.

IE:

--> traceroute yahoo.com
traceroute: Warning: yahoo.com has multiple addresses; using 66.94.234.13
traceroute to yahoo.com (66.94.234.13), 64 hops max, 52 byte packets
1 fifaworldcup.yahoo.net (66.94.234.13) 0.743 ms 0.621 ms 0.519 ms
2 fifaworldcup.yahoo.net (66.94.234.13) 2.077 ms 2.058 ms 1.827 ms
3 fifaworldcup.yahoo.net (66.94.234.13) 1.252 ms 1.367 ms 1.275 ms
4 fifaworldcup.yahoo.net (66.94.234.13) 31.639 ms 8.015 ms 2.628 ms
5 fifaworldcup.yahoo.net (66.94.234.13) 2.640 ms 2.775 ms 9.935 ms
6 fifaworldcup.yahoo.net (66.94.234.13) 84.732 ms 84.861 ms 84.851 ms
7 fifaworldcup.yahoo.net (66.94.234.13) 84.927 ms 85.025 ms 84.931 ms
8 fifaworldcup.yahoo.net (66.94.234.13) 98.847 ms 85.019 ms 84.949 ms
9 * * *

It looks like the traceroute is working right, but my DNS is mucked? Or the ActionTec is rewriting the packet when it comes back? Or the ActionTec isn't writing the packet correctly at all when it comes back?

Any ideas?

I do not have an ActionTec, however, it looks like they need to fix this with a firmware update.

Probably should contact ActionTec and point this out to them??

Hmm DNS is definetly doing something strange, but it looks more complicated than that. You arent showing any hops in-between you and the end result... hmmmm (mebe its just the router causing this?)

Heres what my trace looks like (gotta love that 32ms gw hop lol.. but i`m boggin w/ BT heh)

Tracing route to fifaworldcup.yahoo.net [66.94.234.13]

Trace complete.

I did a trace on yahoo.com and let my dns decide which IP to trace, it came back with 216.109.112.135 instead of the above 66.x.x.x

HMMMMMMMM... i`m on VZ Dsl, mebe that makes a difference... Using 151.201.0.38 as dns res...

if it aint broke, tweak it!!
currently on VZ-DSL (good stuff)

**edit

scratch that, i thought my dns's were as above.. my f/w sez its using 71.252.0.12...

Definitely check for the latest firmware. With the ActionTec, if you home page icons are running across the top of the screen, you've got the latest firmware.

Clearly its the router, but if you notice, the round-trip times increase as we go through the hops. It's not a DNS problem, but a router translation problem.

Do you even have an ActionTec router? If so, what's the version #?

heh no I dont actually... was just trying to give some insight to this problem.

even when fios is actually available here later this year I wont run that garbage router. No offense, I just dont like boxed routers. Too many strange problems. My linux f/w is much too stable to get rid of.

good luck with that trace, hope the firmware fixes it.

There is a firmware upgrade at the above link. I couldn't get the router to do the automatic upgrade, so I d/l the file, then used the manual method. None of my configuration changed, but the router shows the updated f/w, and the icons are along the top now.

This is the about page and I also have a new restore f/w icon on the advanced page:

Hmmm; the release date is strange. I have April 23, 2006, another guy posted he has June something 2006. Feb 22 seems out of date.
Version: 4.0.16.1.44.28
Release Date: Apr 23 2006

Try this link: »upgrade.actiontec.com/MI ··· 24WR.OLD and try doing a firmware update with that. Let me know how it goes, then try doing a traceroute and see what happens.

I have the same problem. I have reported it to Actiontec via E-mail. I got a (possibly automated) response passing the buck to Verizon. Has anybody tried to report this to Verizon via the 800 number? I tried the Verizon "help" E-mail which allowed me a 70 character message eliciting a useless automated response. This short message is MUCH more than 70 characters long.

Don't really want to be the guinea pig. Verizon and ActionTec both claim that the router provided by Verizon is customized for FIOS. Does anybody know how to get into a meaningful dialog with Actiontec?

Other than this problem which is no big deal to me, I am very happy with the Actiontec. It has better wireless coverage than my older Linksys and I have not had to reset it ever (just 2 weeks, mind you, but my old router and cable modem would rarely stay up for a week without a reset). I think of it as the MONSTER router because of it's size and the performance claims in the manual.

What Linksys did the ActionTec replace? I have a WRT54GS (2.0) running the latest HyperWRT (however, I'm using it currently as a wired-only router (no portables currently, so I have wireless turned OFF)). Is the G connectivity improved?

Hello,

ooglek is correct: this is indeed a bug or misconfiguration of the MI424-WR's address translation support. The source address of each ping reply is set to the destination address of the original ping even if the time-to-live is exceeded, making it appear that they all come from the final destination.

As far as I can tell, the device is not sold as a retail product and is unsupported through the manufacturer's website. For this reason any push for an update will probably need to be directed through Verizon.

KenAF, where did you find this firmware? It is unavailable via the MI424-WR's web interface, Actiontec's website, and Verizon's website. We'd appreciate a link to solve this problem. Until then the only thing to do is bug Verizon support about it.

I just got off the phone with the Fiber Solutions Center (Shannon, male) and Eric from ActionTec.

Eric confirmed that the v4.0.16.1.45.80.2 firmware IS the latest and greatest, but is currently still in testing and not yet available to us general population citizens, with no date set that he knew of for release. Engineers, all committment phobes. Unless "someone" were to post it...

Eric also confirmed this new firmware fixes the traceroute problem, and additionally that the M1424-WR is built solely for Verizon, and that any firmware upgrades from ActionTec are Verizon-customized and Verizon-approved.

Anyway, that's what I know.

The 4.0.16.1.45.80.2 firmware was available for download on the Actiontec site from August 1-3, I believe.

I still have a copy and will upload it Wednesday.

In addition to fixing traceroute, the new firmware greatly simplifies the router's interface. All the current options remain, as far as I can tell, Actiontec/Verizon just changed the ui layout.

ActionTec has removed this file... I wonder why.

Can anyone host it or send it to me via Email proxxpain@aol.com

Thank you
