Overclocking P4 to 5.25 Ghz with Liquid Nitrogen!

This liquid nitrogen is so cold, it's actually giving off steam!

As you can see, parts of the motherboard are starting to freeze over after about an hour.

Proof right here, 5.25 Ghz! Insane!
The guys at THG or tomshardwareguide.com are freaking crazy
They were ablw to overclock a P4 to 5.25 Ghz using liquid nitrogen but benchmarks were not able to run. All I know about the Pentium 4 is that it was a Northwood model. Here are some links to the video for all you non-believers out there.

»www12.tomshardware.com/i ··· 5ghz.zip
»www4.tomshardware.com/im ··· 5ghz.zip
»www.de.tomshardware.com/ ··· 5ghz.zip

These guys are raising the bar for overclockers everywhere. The temperature of the CPU got down to -320.8 F
You got to be nuts to try something like this;)

Liquid Helium next? hmmm...

Heh heh.

Freezing those caps has to be a little bit bad though. Those are paste caps, freezing that stuff in the inside might screw up the performance of them. I think that they might have tried to isolate those components from getting that cold, with a UHV heater tape or something.

The purpose was to see how high they could overclock the P4;)

How'd they change the multiplier?

They didn't change the multiplier...they used a p4 3.4 ghz.

at least it looks like it...since a p4 3.2ghz 800fsb has a multiplier of 16 (200x16=3200)...therefore the 3.4ghz has one of 17. (200x17=3400)

Damn it, I was too late to post this topic
Well, I just saw whole thing at Tom's Hardware web-site and dang! This guys are crazy... Also, have you notice that Tom's Hardware is getting more votes from people after that article (and VGA Charts Part III)? Check out the vote result at newegg.com at down right side. I personally think Tom's hardware is better Tech Review than Anandtech. I really don't know about Anadtech but Tom's hardware makes cool video as well so that's pretty neat too...

id like to see a liq. nitro. cooled overclocked vid card, never seen that before, liq nitro on cpus is nothing new, and 5.25ghz has already been broken like 6months+ ago by some japanese or somethin

In my personal opinion, overclocking video card is not that fun as overclocking CPU. And I don't think video card need that much cooling though :P

But THG can not always be credible! They ahve posted too many "false" benches and results in the past for me personally to believe them.. Just my 2 cents.. but that is a helluva an OC

I know, THG lost some (maybe a lot) vote after that Athlon 64 review. Since so many people are mad and complaining, they soon updated the Athlon 64 review but still it wasn't good enough for AMD fans(like me). Anyway, for my guess, THG are trying to make these stuff to makes up to things for those "false" benches. But then... they still used Intel CPU ...

I thought the Northwood core wasn't able to go past 3.2Ghz? Can someone confirm this?

Not even just that.. I am talking many many reviews and benchies in the past long before the whole Athy64 thing.. they don't have a good track record (

"Sources close to Intel are reporting about two new microprocessors for Socket 478 infrastructure to emerge in the first quarter 2004. The first processor will be Intel Pentium 4 Extreme Edition at 3.40GHz with 2MB of L3 cache, the second one will be the Intel Pentium 4 processor at 3.40GHz with 512KB of L2 cache. Both chips will be produced using Intel’s mature 0.13 micron technology and will feature 800MHz Quad Pumped Bus being compatible with existing i865 and i875P infrastructure. "

my take on this is, is that the P4 3.4ghz will be the last P4 with the Northwood core.

nope. They were using what is called an ES (Engineering Sample) It is a cpu straight from Intel that has unlocked multi's.

I want to see a nice overclock with an fx. If they got an amd up to 4.5, drool, that would be an overclock. Grant it 5.25 is definately a nice overclock. Congrats to thg. Now someone hurry up and break it so thg can't have any claim to fame.

"This liquid nitrogen is so cold, it's actually giving off steam!"

That's not steam you fool, that's the nitrogen evaporating. Now what would be amazing is if you got water out of nitrogen.
