10,000 SBC Job Cuts
Blames regulation and 'Do Not Call' list
SBC will be cutting some six percent of its workforce, which could wind up being between ten and twenty thousand workers. According to CNN/Money, the reason for the job cuts are due to "regulatory decisions" and the national "Do Not Call" Registry. Yet the FCC has spent the past four years trying to eliminate line-sharing rules and recently gave the bells the right to refuse competitors access to next-generation fiber.

Telemarketing = bad

I still don't see why they blame this on the Do not Call law. Just seems ridiculous IMO.

It wouldn't bother me one bit if all those 10,000 jobs were telemarketing jobs, because I hate those f*ckers. Here with BrightHouse, I keep getting hounded by their calls and snail mail trying to get me to use their "digital" cable service. I already have Cable modem service via Earthlink on their lines. That's all I do need from them. I have my TV via DirecTV.

It got extremely frustrating, to the point where they had been leaving constant messages saying about "money saving offers" - i.e. try to sell me onto their craptacular caTV service. Finally, I called them back and informed them that they would be under violation of the DNC list if they kept on calling me at this rate. Then the bimbo b*tch on the phone dared to tell me that because I was already doing business with them, they were exempt under this law and could call me all I wanted. I threatened to call the police and press charges on her personally if I hung up there, and then they quickly decided to obey.

Since SBC doesn't even service Florida AFAIK (or at least not this part of FL), then this doesn't affect me either way. Still though, with the kind of job market there is now (no thanks to the Bush Administration - now tell me why you voted for him AGAIN? ), it's going to be much more difficult to reallocate those displaced workers elsewhere now.
