Cost of 1 Gigabyte in Africa: $1,800 1.5 Percent of Continent connected Friday May 19 2006 10:00 EDT According to the Associated Press, Africans pay on average 90 times what Americans pay for data downloads. Americans pay on average $20 for one gigabyte of data per month, while Africans pay $1,800. "The only undersea fiber optic cable to connect several African countries and the rest of the world - remains the most expensive in the world and contributes to the high costs of bandwidth in Africa," notes a Kenyan official. Only about 1.5 percent of Africa's estimated 906 million people are connected to the Internet. |
