AT&T Expands 75 Mbps U-Verse Tier to 9 New Markets

AT&T has announced that the company's 75 Mbps U-Verse tier has expanded to another nine markets. According to the AT&T blog post, AT&T's creatively-named High Speed Internet 75 tier should arrive in Chicago, IL; Cincinnati, OH; Columbus/Tupelo/West Point/Hattiesburg, MS; Gainesville, FL; Little Rock Monroe, LA; El Dorado, AK; Panama City, FL; Tulsa, OK and Wilmington, NC throughout the summer.

According to AT&T, its faster 75 Mbps option is now available in parts of more than 100 cities across 70 markets.

Of course as we've noted previously, AT&T's faster fiber to the node tiers (45 Mbps and up) may not actually be available even if AT&T's covering your neighborhood. Copper loop length, copper quality, and the availability of an extra pair all impact whether or not users can actually get these faster speeds.

"We’re delivering download speeds that are twice as fast," AT&T said in a statement. "We upgraded our network with a new 17 MHz signal, which is twice the 8.5 MHz signal previously available."

Coverage map is incredibly exaggerated

So absurd that that coverage map appears to cover the entire state of Florida, whereas this announcement amounts to two small cities within one very large state. Meanwhile, in this part of South Florida, 3 Mbps is still the fastest speed available.

Too late for Socal

Most of the Los Angeles cable market has upgraded to speeds up to 300 Mbps (for around the same price as AT&T's 75), with even the slowest speed (50 Mbps) beating the 2nd fastest U-Verse tier.

TWC has basically said: your move, AT&T. Only AT&T won't be able to answer 300 Mbps internet for $85 or so until they forget about copper and deploy gigapower only.
