Hoping to counter Verizon's new slightly more flexible cable bundles, Cablevision has unveiled a promotion of its own intended to appeal to would-be cord cutters. According to the Cablevision announcement, the company is now offering users a "cord cutting package" that includes 50 Mbps broadband service, a free $70 Mohu Leaf 50 indoor HDTV antenna, and access to Cablevision's Wi-Fi hotspot network for $50 a month (plus a $5 modem rental fee).
It's the first time I can remember that a cable operator has actually urged customers to get TV from other than traditional cable (outside of when companies
handed out antennas during retrans fights).
Cablevision also announced it's offering users a second, "Every Day Low Price" package that includes 5 Mbps broadband, access to Cablevision's new Freewheel Wi-Fi calling service, the same free antenna and access to Cablevision's network of hotspots for $35 a month (plus $5 modem rental fee).
Cablevision's Freewheel Wi-Fi calling service gives free unlimited calling and text for $10 a month extra if you're an Optimum Online customer, or $30 a month if you're not. It requires the purchase of a Motorola Moto G Smartphone for $99, and it should be noted that there's no cellular backup for the service.
Users can tack on HBO Go for another $15 a month to either package, as Cablevision's one of only
two companies selling the service during a three month Apple iOS device exclusive with HBO.
