Charter CEO Claims Fat Cable Bundles Are Going Nowhere
Charter CEO Tom Rutledge doesn't think cord cutting poses much of a threat to the traditionally bloated, pricey cable TV bundle. Speaking at the annual Citi 2017 Internet, Media and Telecommunications Conference in Las Vegas this week, Rutledge claimed there's "a lot of reasons why the packages, the big rich packages, will stay together, and why people will continue to pursue their historic patterns." Someone may want to tell Rutledge's TV customers that; they've been abandoning traditional TV in significant volume, and many are annoyed by the Keystone-Cops-esque support being given recently acquired Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks customers.

"...people will continue to pursue their historic patterns."

Negative, Ghostrider.
I have Charter. Internet only because your TV bundles are at the level of highway robbery.

I pay $35 a month for DirecTV Now. Works great and I don't pay Charter $100+ for the same amount of channels plus three HD DVRs.
Piss off, Mr Rutledge. Your TV service is overpriced.

He's wrong...

I cut the cord a long time ago and never looked back. I hate to break it to Charter's incredibly naive CEO, but that business model is bleeding out on the pavement and it is only a matter of time until it is dead. As far as I am concerned live TV in general is a dinosaur already with the only exception being sports and the news. (Heck even the news I would rather get Online, so maybe scratch that one too.) I don't personally watch sports, so I have absolutely 0 reason to watch Live TV.

Wrong...

After my divorce is final and I move, I'll be internet only. The wife was the only reason I had to keep the bloated TV packages from cable or DTV. I'll get a HD OTA antenna to watch the locals.

The fact that he is mentioning it means it's on his mind

If it's on his mind, it is probably because he sees the fat bundles causing a problem for him.

If fat bundles were so great, he wouldn't find the need to talk about them...

Combined loss of 1 million a year....

The combined losses of cable providers has been around 1 million customers a years.
The average US population growth per year over the last 20+ years is 2 million per year.

Some providers might gain some because other providers had a nasty dispute, but the next year that is often reversed. Nevertheless, as an industry they are losing and bleeding customers, while with the growth of 2 million individuals a year (mostly natural births, some immigration) they should have gotten at least 500,000 customers growth EACH YEAR from people moving out, JUST to stay STAGNANT on the market share.

I'd say the cable execs are a little clueless. They may realize they are the slaves and bitches of the programming and content owners, and they appear to have no appetite to stand up to them.

5mbps upload

Tom also thinks 5mbps is plenty while the big four all have LTE nets that achieve 5-10mbps+ UP out in the real world. The supermajority even offer unlimited plans for new customers. Why pay for two unlimited plans?
