Charter Gets Cable Operator Of The Year Honors
Really?
Charter Communications almost always places dead last in most customer satisfaction studies, fares poorly among our user reviews for service quality, and the company's debt-load has made it hard for them to stay competitive with speed upgrades. That hasn't stopped CableWorld Magazine from dubbing Charter their cable operator of the year.
quote:
CableWorld cited a number of noteworthy accomplishments as rationale for choosing Charter to receive this recognition. Charter has addressed its nearest-term debt maturities; Charter has rapidly expanded its telephone footprint to take advantage of the triple-play offering; and Charter has developed a consistent, data-driven marketing plan.
The company's CEO has recently been seen slumming it with his techs in order to better understand where their customer support failures occur. They're also in the process of bumping users (at least the ones in competitive regions) to faster 10Mbps and 16Mbps tiers. Perhaps Charter customers can let us know if Charter is really turning a corner, or if they're seeing more of the same from the traditionally troubled provider.

OMG

You must be kidding me!?!?!

I had Charter Slow Speed Internet, well it was marketed as High Speed Internet but I never got my 3/256 at the time. Anywho, it never worked!

My fiance's parents have Charter WannaBe Internet and it never works either. And their technical support? Wow, it is terrible!

I thought Cox would have gotten it. I wonder who Charter paid off for this award?

Hard to believe

There has to be a catch to this award.
I do get the speeds that they advertise. I get a solid 5/512 connection. My cable Tv works well too.
The issues i now have with charter is A) I have a very limited high def channel list and B) my pings are still way to high for my liking. I think charter is trying to improve but for them to suceed they have a long road ahead.

They claim they have 44 HD channels in Louisiana and claim they will be propagating to other areas throughout 2008:

Cox is one of the very few major US "landline" providers with the distinction of having published limits on how much data you can transfer per month.

»www.cox.com/policy/limit ··· ions.asp

Only 4GB/month on the value package, 40GB on preferred, and only 60GB on the "premiere" package. At least you know what you're getting when you order, but those limits are not very impressive. As far as their TV service goes, everywhere I've used them, they are using some ugly, generic DVR software. Overall Cox isn't bad at all, but I don't know if they are doing anything that makes me want to hand them an award.

WOW seemed impressive when they came out, but they don't seem to be keeping up with general upgrade momentum of the other major providers. Now their speeds aren't so "WOW"ing.

»www1.wowway.com/internet ··· iew=MAIN

Which leaves....

Optimum Online. They've been pushing the limit on what cablemodems can do, years before the big guys. Like WOW, they serve a limited footprint, but you can't help but be impressed by their internet services.

Comcast. Big company (most of the faults that go along with an oversized company) but they seem to be an aggressive upgrader, genuinely be trying to raise the bar technically, consistently upgrading speeds year by year. We get lots of "rah rah" news stories and usually have a good idea what their goals are.

Time Warner. They seem to play one step behind Comcast with almost everything, and operate in an understated, somewhat disorganized fasion. It almost seems as if Time Warner is a corporate "machine" that runs umanned; a group with no leader that just reacts to its surroundings. It's not all bad, I've had nothing but the best of luck with Road Runner. But, they need to work on their image, they are dispised by almost everyone I talk to in LA who's been switched from Adelphia or Comcast.

I dunno, having dealt with so many different cable companies, I can't say I really want to give any of them an award. But they've all collectively come a long, long, long way in 10 years, especially on the TV side.

What a JOKE!!! My guess is that Charter paid somebody off..

This is the same company that PROMISED me in Fall of 2003 that I would get cable in the Spring of 2004. I called them back in Spring, gave them names, dates, etc. and they denied it ever happened. These clowns ran cable from BOTH ends of my dead end road, which is 3 miles in total length, past EMPTY corn and hay fields then STOPPED right before they hit the houses.

Cable Operator of the year my backside....these guys need to go bankrupt so that a GOOD company who knows what ROI means takes them over....

Not a dead end road per say. Each end of the road T's into another street. BOTH of those streets are fed by cable as well, and that cable runs for miles in both directions. I have no idea I am from a "plant" but I know the cable originates in the City and out PAST us for miles. The fools at Charter simply ran the cable from both ends of the street right up to where the houses start....then stopped. I can guarantee their Return on Investment is ZERO.

And honestly, regestration has nothing to do with anything, so you have a name for here, that still doesnt tell anybody who you are. So your just as anonymous as the next guy. BTW, I got 10 meg today, doesnt miss a beat, I really didnt expect it to, i had no issues with 5 meg, or any other services.

Uh...OK, then you didn't read my REASONS why they suck. You see, they made a committment, and broke it. When they did run cable, they ran if for a rather long distance from both ends of the street past farm fields. When they hit the first house, they STOPPED...leaving 13 in the middle unserviced.

DSL is not availalbe out here. Yep, I will stick with my original comment CHARTER SUCKS....period.

why not cablevisiojn

Can I ask why did charter get this and not cablevision. Cablevision offers the fastest speeds out of all the cable operators, Allows web and email servers on the boost package and keeps adding hd channels .

They even seemed to stop the capping. IS cablevision too regional of a cable operator to not get it?

Not so bad!

I don't know of the pain that others are talking about. I've had a really good experience with Charter in the Upper Peninsula. We have consistently good tv service, the high speed isn't the fastest, but at least it's reliable and the phone service has never went down and is way cheaper than what I was paying with ATT. The techs that have had to come to my house have always been on time (or even early) and have been friendly, and they have given me enough free Regal cable splitters to open a small shop on eBay. I have never paid any install fees or fees for having to replace a line. All around it's just been a good experience.

o rly?

i have charter and i'm more or less annoyed. over the past year, my bill has gone up with no improvement (or degradation) in service. what really ticks me off is their obsessant advertizing. i think charter is the first company to call repeatedly to "would you like to get some crappy internet (that we will gladly monitor for any and all bittorrent traffic) service and crappy phone service?". lately, they have been trying to contact (based on caller ID) me every other day. when the bill comes, they attach a couple of ads to the envelope you need to send the bill in, and some ads within the envelope. ocassionaly they'll also send more ads in the mail.

when my (technically theirs) digital cable box can't connect to their network after being unplugged for a while, their customer service is typical. i mean to get the problem fixed, it may take a while, but in the end not much aggravation and it does get fixed.

well, i can agree with the overall sentiment of this thread and charter being rated number one....it should not be the case.

but i can also agree with big dawg 23 that if your service just works and works reliably, you do not have to deal with the boneheads at the csr center.

the only choices i really have are charter and att dsl. being 12,000 feet of copper out makes dsl an obvious lesser choice in service and reliability.

i do wish that we had more, higher speed competition to drive charter to upgrade speed packages faster and lower their prices.

Re: 16/2

I was a CSR for charter, up here in the great white north... of southern ontario.

Only 70% of your speed is guaranteed, did you know that? most people who were phoning in for speed issues didn't realize that.

But really, if you look at any internet company, your going to find mostly horror stories.

Why?
Because generally it's the people who speak up that encountered problems, thats why their speaking up, everyone else, with their steady connections, has no reason to bring it up, so they don't.

I'm defending charter though... Tech support for them sucked, and i really can't believe that anyone pays as much as their customers do, for the services they give.

Hell, some people pay less on their rent up here, then people were paying for their monthly internet bill.

I wouldn't have dropped them if I always got 70%+ of my speed. Its when my upload speed was going faster than my download on some days is why I canceled them. Did I mention that I was on the 10mb/1mb plan which cost me $85/month?

In some areas they HAVE improved significantly

The company is still hard to deal with but before when I called for support I would speak with someone poorly trained with poor english skills. They have since relocated their support centers to Canada and are providing a good training regimen for those employees. In my two calls this year I have gotten great service.

Billing is actually worse but that might be because of a billing system transition (They actually failed to send bills out for a month and a half) and they claim that this transition will make the system signigicantly better.

Up until last month the speeds and performance have been rock solid, but my region has reached a saturation point and now speeds have plummeted. It has gotten so bad that even at 11pm at night I can't get over 800k down on a 10 meg connection.

So IF they resolve the billing problems they have always had, IF they continue to improve customer service, and IF they resolve the saturation issues they are having then they will be by far the best Cable company but look at their competition

After 1+ year of various problems and Corporate Escalations I've only got some issues resolved and still having problems with others such as modem Upstream Pwr fluctuation and Ranging T3 timeouts and some intermittent static (not noise) on certain TV channels.
They certainly don't deserve any "honors" here.

You gotta be kidding.

Of course I live in an area where they don't have to complete in any real sense. FIOS is a long way away. The town itself just rolls over and takes whatever Charter is willing to offer in contract negotiations from the sound of it. ---We will see on that one in a month.

But to answer the question ya Charter still sucks big time.

No Way

I do not like that Charter is always 1-2 years behind what the 'big boys' are doing. I have 19 HD channels in my area, only 15 not counting premium movie channels. DirecTV says they will have 100 by the end of the year.

16 meg internet I'm hearing about, they have no idea when that will be in my area. My 10 meg HSI was performing at 1 meg for weeks. Although after I wrote a few letters to the Corporate and local office it has been working well for the last two weeks, so +1 for Charter on that.

Calling support for an issue...the phone navigation is terrible and the phone reps have no information. Going to the local office means I have to deal with the same two crabby ladies always there acting like I'm interrupting them from something.

My bill has gone from $184/month in Sep to $204/month in Dec even though I removed premium movie channels to try and save money.

I contacted my city cable rep about getting more competition. It's an open market they say and any other company can come in if they want. Guess I'll have to hope for the bankruptcy to happen.

I've called in twice recently to ask! I'm currently getting $10 off per month each on the 10MB internet and phone service, but only for 12 months. I can't wait till that expires and my bill goes up another $20 a month plus taxes!

Currently: $89/month for digital and HD tier (no movie channels), 4 cable cards and wire maintenance; $64/month for 10MB HSI and modem; $30/month for phone; $22/month for taxes.

I guess since the goal is to get as much customer money as possible they are doing a great job and should be cable operator of the year!
