Comcast's 2 Gigabit 'Gigabit Pro' Is Still a No Show

Back in April Comcast announced that the company would be deploying two gigabit service to 18 million households by the end of this year. A blog post at the time stated the service would "soon" be launched in Atlanta, making its way to chunks of twelve other markets. Indications were that the company's first Gigabit Pro markets would go live by the end of May, but it's now almost mid-July and the company's service has yet to make an appearance.

When I asked Comcast for comment the company couldn't explain the delay, but suggested they may have more information to share next week.

Comcast's plan to deploy two gigabit fiber to the home service to 18 million homes in five months is even more ambitious than when announced three months ago. The company has suggested to me this tally is indeed "homes served" and not just "homes passed," the latter often being used by ISPs to make deployments appear bigger than they actually are.

Comcast has also remained coy on precisely what this ultra-fast service will cost. As we exclusively noted back in May, Comcast's website briefly leaked that the service would cost users $300 a month, though the company told me that price point was posted in error and the cable giant was still contemplating pricing.

Hopefully next week sheds more light on how Comcast plans to conduct a mammoth fiber to the home build in less than half a year, and how much Comcast users can expect to pay for the ultra-fast service. Also worth watching is whether Gigabit Pro pricing will be lower in markets where Comcast faces competition from Google Fiber or municipal broadband efforts.

Update: While I've yet to see anyone successfully sign up for service some users in Atlanta say they're being told by Comcast that the tier will be $300 a month, not including a $500 installation fee and a $500 activation fee (likely the reason Comcast hasn't wanted to talk much about this product's pricing).

Isn't the price official now?

I know this doesn't mean actual availability, but some users here are reporting 2Gb announcements with pricing showing up on their current bills.....

Some are getting calls

I don't know if they've updated their website, but some people have been getting called in Atlanta and offered the service: »www.reddit.com/r/Atlanta ··· bit_pro/

$300/mo plus $20/mo equipment rental with installation and activation that add up to $1000 and a painful ETF. There are other posts where people stated they're getting called, but I'm too lazy to look them up. Hopefully they'll call me so I can ask them why they're not taking their pricing seriously.
