Existing contracts? What happens with existing contracts? Mine is coming up for renewal, and I don"t want to lock in the slower speed.

Re: Existing contracts? You just need to call and ask for the higher speeds if there's no price difference. If there is a price difference, they're always willing to let you pay more.
You might have trouble if the price is lowered, but that's not very likely.

said by ptb42:What happens with existing contracts? Mine is coming up for renewal, and I don"t want to lock in the slower speed. It would seem that if they are changing the speeds, you'll get the speed change. E.g., Today you sign a one year contract for 25/25 service. Next month 25/25 ceases to exist and it's now 50/25. Seems like for you'd get 50/25 once they switch as they will stop provisioning 25/25 to anyone. ""As far as I know, it will be like old upgrades where everyone will remain on the same plan and I'm assuming pay more for the increase," says the source. These changes should be arriving somewhere around June 18. " Sounds like you will get the bump speed, and may get a corresponding increase to your price, even though you are under contract. But I don't see how you'll have 25/25 in my hypothetical when they cease to provision that speed to anyone, anymore.

We had our town wired as of the first install. It's been years they still haven't wired older apts. New green builds yes not the one already built.

Re: Meaninless...There are often conflicts with the building owners who have been locked into exclusivity contracts by cable, RCN... they don't want Verizon coming in and messing up the building with new wires run all over... or they have been screwed over by Verizon in the past and could care less if Verizon wants to come in. I have only been approached by one building owner who said he wanted FIOS run in the building but Verizon wasn't contacting him despite many of his tenants trying to order. I called the FIOS engineer for him but don't know what happened.
Of course, there is also the fact that Verizon is just not interested in FIOS anymore. They have stopped the roll-out into areas that don't currently have franchise agreements. They are also trying to lay-off techs in the already drastically reduced workforce. The techs that are still here are being assigned to moving copper customers onto FIOS (this is bad for a number of reasons). Simply put, Verizon should change its motto from 'We make progress everyday' to 'We'll get to it when we get to it'

said by DownTheShore:...unless they start wiring the apartment complexes with FIOS. This is largely dependent on the owner of the apartment complex in question. In many cases they are built in such a way that all the copper lines are hidden in the wall, and a single pair (or 2 pairs) are available for each apartment. The conduits they are in might simply be too narrow to add additional cabling, except replacing all cables in one go. Often they also have a central mini-CO on site that works perfectly for regular phone lines and DSL, but has to be replaced for fiber. That is a rather costly venture, and Verizon is not going to want to wire up all 200 apartments with fiber (or however many there are) with a fair amount of existing DSL accounts and no guarantee that there will be a certain amount of FIOS customers. And it is also likely the apartment complex owner is not going to want to bear that cost. Other apartment complexes have conduits for each apartment, or are wired on the outside walls. In those cases, FIOS can be installed on an individual basis as it is much easier to replace the individual wires. Again though, it is partly dependent on what the owner of the complex says with regards to wires, as once you go FIOS, you can't go back to copper. Best thing to do if you want to get FIOS, is move to a private rental, or a complex that you know allows individual installs of FIOS.

Re: Meaningless...Most of the apartment buildings (at least here in NYC) do not have a home-run of coax from each apartment to the basement, they have feeders going up to closets on each floor and distribute the signal from there. Also, while the coax would work fine for video & Internet, the FIOS equipment cannot use coax for dialtone.

More of nothingRealistically speaking one only needs 15/5. I have 25/25 because I do a lot of cloud stuff, and TWC is 30/5 which sucks for cloud. Cloud needs uplink... Anything above that is for pure convenience. I can run VMW view on a 3MB link just fine, so cloud is not an issue). And 15/5 is 15/5 -- there is no TWC lucky to see 5Mbs on a 15/2. What would be disappointing is that they introduce caps after doubling bandwidth when everyone knows that bandwidth isn't a problem for VZ and even TWC in my area (considering only 2 neighbors on my block still have TWC ) My neighbor pays $160 for TWC (triple play, 5 TV) which is a bigtime rip. I told them to get fios double play, move phone to GV-> Cell and pay $85/month. Then buy some roku boxes for the kids. So save $60-$70/month. If they cap the first thing to go will be phone, and then people will pull cable (go OTA or internet) and then they will be left wondering why they put caps in when margins are already sick (60%+). In NY my phone only cost $4 in taxes (it's IP) so it was actually more expensive to do the double play (they like it that way). Sooner of later that is going to cause me to leave. They have also dropped 5 channels in the last few months, and added zero. They were junk, but then 90% is junk so keep pruning.

I have 35/35 and to say one only needs 15/5 isn't true in a house with lots of users that uses a lot of netflix, gaming and downloads I often see my router pushing over 25mbps for a sustained period of times, true one user may not need 35/35 or 75//35 for anything, but multiple users, especially if you have some heavy users can easily be needed to ensure everyone in the house gets a speedy internet connection. I'm looking forward to the additional bandwidth.

I'm looking forward to the additional bandwidth. This is exactly right. People who make the claim that you don't 'need' x speed don't seem to understand that there are households with LOTS of connected devices. There are 7 of us in our house - and between the BD players, smart TV, computers, kindles, ipod touches, DSis, and other gaming systems (not to mention the fact that Verizon handles VOD via their IP feed), we're continually straining even our 35 Mbps download speed.

I telecommute, and typically move a lot of data to/from either my company's servers or a customer. I downloaded a 40GB VM image a few days ago. 15/5 may be enough for casual users. But, I appreciate having the option for more, especially at a reasonable increment in cost.

Hmm, Verizon caps...reminds me of selling cars with more horsepower, but tripling the fines for speeding... enabling! Seriously, I have the 15/5 and it speedtests out at 25/15 or lower at 25/10. So I am not complaining I'd go back to FiOSTV bundle if it were $75/month for ExtremeHD+25/25 (currently listed as $99/mnth not including taxes, etc). I don't miss those repeating shows, dis-infommercials for idiots, monthly channel-lineup changes ...

I pretty much always get 5 mbit uploads on my TWC D3 cable modem. I really only test FTP over VPN to my office - but that's still a pretty fair test with VPN overhead and congestion at my office.

I have speeds in excess of what you feel anyone needs, and there are many times when I can peg it without torrents or downloading porn....

This is greatSo if you have a contract you get a bonus speed upgrade and likely without an increase. If you don't you have an increase but you get a speed grade boost (a nice one at that).
Suck that Comcrap. At least Verizon is raising its speeds with its price increases.
Not only that but 300mbps service? I'm on 150/35 so SIGN ME UP I need more speed for work.

No kidding. I'm on Frontier--which isn't half bad--AND VDSL--which is horrible--so I'll never see anything above 20/5 unless I move. Hmmm...back to Keller?

So what happens to the 50/20 tier?Personally I am stoked that my 25/25 is now going to become faster than the 50/20 tier, and even with a rate hike, still won't cost nearly as much BUT What happens to 50/20? I don't see ANYTHING about what will happen to 50/20. I live in a BPON market where the "Top" tier right now is 50/20. Is it going away, or getting bumped up to something? I don't think the article implies that it is going away, nor does it suggest it is getting a bump too.

Only MeIn the "It Can Only Happen To Me" category I called VZ up a few days ago to have my home phone changed or dropped altogether because of a ton of collection calls that were not for me. Long story short if I drop the phone off my 35/35 triple I would see no price decrease. If I dropped down to 25/25 Double I'd see a $5 decrease. Now here's the kicker - if I keep my current Triple AND sign a new two year contract my price goes UP $5 a month starting on Day One. Needless to say I'll stay on month-to-month and see what happens when the new price hikes - and now these speed increases - come down the chute. I'm drooling over clutching that 75 Mb pipe in my gnarly little hands and ride it for it's worth.

How is this symmetrical? symmetrical means the same not different.

So jealous...I'm trembling and lusting after FIOS customers. Verizon built up the western half of my city before they announced they're stopping expansion so you can imagine my disappointment when I live on the eastern half. Seeing those Verizon FIOS ads had me so excited, it was sooo close yet so far.
Doesn't help they sold there FIOS infrustructure to Frontier which is just completely destroying the service. I think they really want to offload fiber customers and put them on DSL, at least that's what it looks like.

What's with all the weird upload speeds? This company just can't seem to do anything perfectly.
50/25? 75/35? Why are they half-assing the upload?
Just make the shit symmetrical and call it a day. We all know the capacity is there.
This is just another American ISP slooooowly inching out speed upgrades over the years and making it seem as if they are constantly upgrading their network when the capacity is already there.
Why does Verizon's fiber optic network deliver such relatively slow speeds when Japan and South Korea have had true symmetrical 1 Gbps for years?
|

June 18???If this is true then how can it be that they haven't disclosed the imminent price hike yet? The June 18 date must be off by a few months....I haven't read anything official in terms of a service/price increase in my bills or anything else received by Verizon (then again, this is Verizon billing we are talking about but they've always been good in alerting about increases or changes in service in a timely manner).
|
| |
Re: June 18???Existing users will need to pay $10 for upgrade. No one will be upgraded automatically
|
| | |
Re: June 18???said by Onedollar:Existing users will need to pay $10 for upgrade. No one will be upgraded automatically I see. So when existing contracts expire then we all will have to pay more for internet but will be getting faster service, correct?

This might be enough for me to order FiOS.I've been on BrightHouse 40/5, even though I can get FiOS 35/35 for the same price. And I host servers here, so you know faster upload appeals to me.
So why have I stayed with BH? They're a good company. They support their infrastructure and treat their customers well.
This FiOS speed increase - it might inspire me to jump ship. I keep hearing rumors about BH increasing their top tiers, but it never seems to materialize.
I'll be thinking hard about it.

150meg tier? Yeah ok.Has anyone really tried to get 150 from Verizon? You have to call about 100 times hoping to get someone that knows anything about it then when you do it's an act of god to get it installed. I really doubt by June these upgrades will roll out. I hope I'm wrong but I wonder what type of hoops I'm going to go through in trying to convince the reps at Verizon this is actually true.
