FCC Creates Net Neutrality 'Committee' A Place for AT&T, Netflix, Comcast and Cisco to Bicker? Wednesday May 30 2012 09:13 EDT As we've noted for years, like most FCC policies, their 2010 network neutrality rules were more show than substance. The rules don't do very much, failing to cover wireless in any meaningful way, while allowing pretty much any network behavior so long as it can be defended as an action that's necessary to protect network integrity. As part of those rules the agency stated they'd create a committee to discuss network neutrality infractions -- and today the agency announced that Comcast, AT&T, Netflix, Disney, Mozilla, Cisco, and Alcatel Lucent would all be part of the "Open Internet Advisory Committee." The committee will be headed by Harvard law and computer science professor Jonathan Zittrain, and co-chaired by MIT research scientist David Clark, and tasked, according to the FCC, with monitoring the impact of the agency's 2010 neutrality rules. Carriers have already pummeled the FCC with opinions on neutrality, this process appears to simply create a documentable, public forum in which they can do so (or not). Notably absent are those companies that are suing to have the rules overturned, like Verizon. While the rules really don't do much (which is precisely why Comcast and AT&T didn't oppose them), Verizon is suing in the hopes of reducing the FCC's authority moving forward -- so the rules don't grow fangs down the road. Verizon's particular interest on this front is wireless, where they're now offering a heavily capped fixed LTE residential service they hope to layer with a video streaming joint venture with RedBox. |

MoneyThe central depository for telecom lobbyist money.
This isn't that hard to figure out. The economists scream the loudest because effects on money are more important to everyone screaming than individual rights. Remember, if you question the system at some point someone will say "making money isn't bad is it?".
Brought to you since about 1970 when some people figured out how to game the entire economic system of this country in their favor. Now they have to make sure the spread of real information is controlled but frame it as an economic issue for the biggest of companies they give control over the wording of the laws.

Verizon's Fusion is Fixed Terrestrial Wirelessquote: Verizon's particular interest on this front is wireless, where they're now offering a heavily capped fixed LTE residential service
I have little doubt Verizon will consider their Fusion as a mobile wireless connection, and thus be exempt from many of the net neutrality restrictions that wired and fixed wireless terrestrial (WISPs) have to follow.

Re: Verizon's Fusion is Fixed Terrestrial Wirelesswhat restrictions?? There are none to start off with. The FCC has no control over the Internet. This has been said before countless times and the Courts have even told the FCC they have no control.

Will gothe way of the birds in the winter.
This committee will be nothing more than a way for the telcos to sue the FCC for trying to create more rules they can't create let alone in force.
