Google Who? Sonic Brings Fiber to Big Chunk of San Francisco

Yesterday Google Fiber stole headlines with its announcement that it would be offering gigabit broadband to a few apartment buildings in San Francisco...some day. While the announcement was extremely light on details regarding price, full scope, and availability (read: virtually none), it overshadowed the launch of a significantly larger and cheaper San Francisco gigabit fiber deployment by independent ISP Sonic, one of the only viable survivors of the CLEC/ILEC wars of years past.

According to a blog post by Sonic CEO Dane Jasper, Sonic's now offering uncapped gigabit fiber -- plus unlimited phone service -- for $40 a month, notably less than Google Fiber's $70 price point. The unlimited home phone calling componentincludes unlimited nationwide and global calling to 66 countries, notes the company.

"After years of planning and construction, I am happy to announce that Sonic has launched our Gigabit Fiber service in San Francisco," states Jasper.

Sonic says that it has deployed its wholly-owned fiber service throughout the Sunset and Richmond Districts in San Francisco, as well as the Jasper and NEMA buildings downtown. The ramped up deployment comes after Sonic deployed gigabit fiber in Brentwood and Sebastopol, plus business parks in Santa Rosa, Petaluma and Windsor.

"$40 per month plus taxes and fees works out to a total of about $58 per month," the company says of the offering. "$58 is about one third of the price that most San Francisco residents are currently paying for their Internet and home phone service through AT&T or Comcast."

Between Sonic, Google and other offerings, San Francisco's becoming one of a growing number of American cities that are, after a decade, finally getting a taste of what actual broadband competition looks like. Interested San Francisco residents can head to Sonic's Gigabit website for more detail and to check for availability.

It's a start

I've been with Sonic for the past 5 years (ADSL2+) before switching recently. Sonic is great company in general but there are few downfalls that drive some people away.

First, Sonic bundles internet service with their phone service (Fusion package) and you can't opt out even if you don't want a phone service. The taxes and fees for the phone service adds up quick (>$10).

Their fiber service covers very small foot print, and it took YEARS before offering one in SF, and most other places won't ever get to see it for the next decade at least.

Their gigabit service isn't symmetrical. It's actually 1000/100 service (which is still superb). But I hope they can change this in the future for true symmetrical gigabit service.

Sonic does not offer native ipv6 support (just 6rd), and has mentioned multiple times that they don't plan to do so. I sincerely hope they change their mind about this. Isn't ipv6 20 years old now?

I know I listed negative stuff about Sonic, but it's still miles better than AT&T or Comcast in service. I hope Sonic can roll out fiber faster than they are currently doing, ADSL2+ speeds just doesn't cut it anymore for many people.

plenty of other cities south of San Francisco very close to the city that could benefit from Sonic including Pacifica.

How many...?

A couple questions for Dane
How many individuals in SF are passed/served by sonic FTTH today? In SF proper?
Is sonic prepared to SHARE their fiber network with Google?
Full coverage of sunset and Richmond is a good start, with the fairly level-ish and gridded streets, Do you have plans to go eastward where the hills will add some serious challenges?

Really Sonic?

"$58 is about one third of the price that most San Francisco residents are currently paying for their Internet and home phone service through AT&T or Comcast."

The average San Francisco customer is paying $174 per month for Internet and Home Phone? Really? Because I highly doubt that.

What taxes and fees?

I thought Interent plans shouldn't have any taxes and fees. Or there is always a phone plan bundled with it?

Gigabit FTTH deployments.

Wake me up when one of these ISPs has actually completed doing FTTP, FTTB, and FTTH for every single building and residence in the city of San Francisco. I predict my nap will last until 3:00 PM Pacific Time on Friday January 1, 2021.
