Google's Brin: Facebook, Apple Threaten Internet Freedom
Censorship and Walled Gardens are Bad, M'Kay?
Google co-founder Sergey Brin had plenty to say in a recent interview in the Guardian, blaming governments, Apple and Facebook for slowly but consistently eroding freedom on the Internet. Governments increasingly are looking to filter Internet content, while Facebook and Apple are engaged in building walled gardens that create a fractured Internet. Both companies, Brin warned, are engaged in business approaches that utilize "proprietary platforms and control access to their users, risked stifling innovation and balkanising the web." Brin apparently forgets that Google worked with Verizon to scuttle wireless network neutrality rules that proponents claim would have helped mitigate some of these "balkanization" efforts.
