Microsoft Leaks Info On New Wi-Fi Service

Microsoft this week accidentally leaked plans for a new Wi-Fi service owned and operated by the Redmond-based software giant. While Microsoft already offers some Wi-Fi service through its Skype brand, a website since pulled offline suggests the Skype brand will be replaced by the "Microsoft Wi-Fi" brand and dramatically expanded in scope.

The site suggests that Microsoft will significantly increase the number of hotspots it operates -- from around two million to ten million, and make them available to the company's Office 365 Enterprise subscribers and users that have purchased a Surface 2 or Microsoft's Work & Play Bundle.

The prematurely published website also suggests Microsoft WiFi will come with its own standalone app for iOS, Android, Windows, Windows Phone and Mac OS X.

"We can confirm that Microsoft is working on a new service, called Microsoft WiFi, that will bring hassle-free Wi-Fi to millions," Microsoft said when asked for a comment. "We look forward to sharing additional detail when available, but don’t have anything at this moment."

How can we trust Microsoft anymore? The federal hack of 4 million personel records was on Microsoft servers. I am saying anything based on Microsoft is doomed!

Yes, because no other OS, server, security system has ever been hacked right?

Re: Trust

With Linux is very difficult. What I'm saying hackers go after Windows based services first because of the ease of breaking it. I know when someone is attempting to break into my Linux boxes and automaticly blocks them! Microsoft products can't do that.

Re: Trust

Linux has exploits too, but you are correct the framework is much more robust than windows.

If it's wifi, run your own VPN on top of that and problem solved. Microsoft has world domination on it's mind and wants to suck every bit of your data on their servers and charge you a subscription to go to the bathroom and we know they already MIIM almost all of their services and that means by proxy a tap to the TLA out there.

It all starts w/ w10 & (server 2014) which is a backdoor to azure. Watch out people. Do you really think it is "free". And even in 2015 MSFT cant solve my PC properly sleeping.

It was only $15 for my Windows 8.1 licenses. Either way it will be inexpensive for me to upgrade my half dozen Windows 8.1 machines to Windows 10.

And I already have 10 Terabytes of storage available with my One Drive. I have no problem with storing my content with Microsoft. Between Office and Xbox Live and Windows, MS has been getting money from me for many, many years. And I don't plan on that to change anytime soon.

You can use any wifi to connect to your Linux server, right?

Can we agree that no wifi is secure, regardless if it's Microsoft or not?

The real question of trust is how does one know which SSID is legit and which one is not?

Maybe the app will handle end to end encryption and SSID authentication?

What does that have to do with Microsoft offering wifi, or wifi in general?

Please stay the fuck on topic.

This is the internet, no one is ever on topic. Any thread that has the words Microsoft, Apple or samsung in the subject, MUST be filled with off-topic hatred / fanboyism immediately and no reasonable discussion will be allowed under any circumstances.

Re: Trust

The subject is WiFi and microsoft and how poor their security is. I'm saying Windows needs to rethink their business model and improve the security of anything they are involved in already. Put the WiFi idea away and let the ones who are already involved in it run it better than Micosoft ever could.

Re: Trust

Windows does have a business model. That operating side's model is to build, and support the Windows Operating system. not hard to get that concept and model out the door.

What about those of us who can find a reason to hate or like almost any of these companies? Apple's walled garden sucks and they're terrible at enterprise but their hardware is nice, Samsung hardware has more hype behind it than Apple but leaves a lot to be desired, and don't get me started on their software. I like Android, but fuck Samsung.

Microsoft was a huge monopolist in the 80s and 90s, into the early 2000s but their software has always been pretty good all things considered for mass marketshare PC programs and are the King of Enterprise. Linux, yes, they had a better inherent security model for years, but Microsoft's is as good if not better these days but people just defeat it because they don't want to be bothered.

I'd love to have an intelligent discussion about technology. But like you said EVERYONE is a fanboy of some sort. Say something good about Apple to a PC or Android fanboy? You're a shill. Say something good about PC/MS or Android to an iPhone/OSX fanboy? You're a shill.

TL;DR, you can't trust anyone...especially in the cloud. Host it yourself on whatever platform you see fit or don't bitch when your data gets compromised.

This is on topic because this MSFT wifi will enable azure which will enable MSFT cloud services (which run on windows servers). So if you think their wifi and or cloud services are secure, then by all means give them your data. If MSFT comes up w/ an app for this, that means they control the trust chain because they may not allow you to layer a VPN on it, and while you folks may know this the average person does not.

This is not just solely a wifi offering, this is a gateway to MSFT cloud services.

For disclosure: I subscribe to Office365 and enjoy it, however I am not diluted into them storing all my data. So one can still enjoy a product and question it.

Re: Trust

Microsoft Azure has Linux servers as well. You misunderstand Microsoft's business model completely. The Azure team don't care about Windows.

They target Windows servers because of economies of scale. There are more of them.

When Microsoft decided to disable my ~ year old version of Skype and required a dubious upgrade to continue to calling out,
is the moment I decided to cut and run. Even though it meant the loss of $0.34 in my Skype account.

I no longer felt I could trust Skype/Microsoft even though I only used it to call toll free 800 numbers.
The hassles of keeping M$ new spyware up to date wasn't worth the effort or risk.

Especially, when I call any number for FREE USA/Canada through Google voice.

Too many Wi-Fi Services..

Comcast, AT&T (McDonalds, Starbucks, etc) and now Microsoft Wi-Fi. It would be nice to see these companies work together to create one, massive, wi-fi network.

Re: Too many Wi-Fi Services..

It's already somewhat happening. Cable Wi-Fi is a cooperative roaming agreement between cable companies. If you are a Time Warner Cable customers not only do you have roaming access to other cable companies' Wi-Fi networks but also to Boingo.

AOL all over again?

I can't help but think of AOL (15-20 years ago) when I read this.

They wanted to promote access to their content and services, so they went added tens of thousands of dial-up lines for people to use to log in to AOL. Every tiny little town had a local dial-in line.

There's a parallel here - MSFT is trying to be place to go to connect from anywhere, and of course they want you to choose their services. (and track every damn keystroke you make).

But the mistake (and this is a big mistake) that MSFT is making is to tie this into Office360 (and other high price services). They're cutting the appeal and potential audience by 85% if they do that. If they want ubiquity and acceptance, then open the wifi doors to everyone.

[Of course, 20 years later, AOL is a shabby remnant of what it used to be. Mostly Steve Case's fault for not thinking.}

Comcast Anyone?

I'm thinking MS is cutting a deal to ride on the Comcast WiFi network, or they are doing the same with Boingo.

Re: Comcast Anyone?

Don't need to. They just need a deal with NNU- NetNearU and they can roam on those hotspots and zones with no problem.

New for 2010!!

This would have been a great idea in 2010 when everyone was talking about laptops and netbooks.

Today everyone has a smartphone with data. Maybe the 7 people who still use a Windows Phone will find value in it.

LOL, don't dare say anything negative about Chromebooks on the Goog + site. You will be eaten alive by miserable system admins who hate themselves..... lol
